Need Advice about pto generators

I live in Florida and am sooooo tired of all the storms and power outages. I can run a portable generator for the lights, but it's too small for the air conditioning and it's too hot to go for long without air conditioning here in Florida. I've got an International 434 3 cylinder diesel 18hp that I use as a grove mower. Does anybody have experience, good or bad, with pto generators? How about any advice on a model that might work with this small of a tractor? Any help/advice would be appreciated.

You could look for a old 2.3 ford 4cyl car engine these have enough power to handle your needs and they make a pto for them the amish run balers and every thing else with including big genators with them to keep there milk cool

I have a 25Kw generator that I run with an Oliver 1550. No problems and she will run for 24 hrs. on less then 20 gals with my normal loads. Summer, 1 large 220 volt AC, 2 110 window units, water well pump, microwave, oven etc. Winter, furnace, water pump, washer dryer, oven, TV's, computer(I do use a UPS).
The individual with a computerized furnace may want to consider a UPS for the control circuit if it is that sensitive to power.

I power my generator with a 4006D Duetz which is 38 HP. It will run 24 hours at constant rpm on about 15 gallons of fuel. The one thing I did findout was that our new furnace with all of the computerised stuff doesn't like the power that my generator puts out. But when you're cold or hot you will find a way to make it work.

I have a 25kw generator that I spin with a 23hp compact. Doesn't give 25kw, more like 17 IIRC. Works great otherwise. Plan is to put a larger tractor on it to get all the power, but you likely wouldn't need that much. I'm powering large 3 phase tools with mine.

You need to determine what your AC requires.

They work great if you have the power to run it. The problem I think you are going to have is a 7000 watt is going to need at least a 20 hp tractor.

A A/C unit usually has a 30 amp breaker. That is 30 x 220 = 6600 watts. And that is just to run the outside unit.

What I have done is to buy a small 110 window unit and install in one room. Every one crowds in this room. (living room in my case) We sleep on blow up beds and try to make it through. It is a rough go but it is better than no A/C.

I don't know IH stuff very well, but I thought that the 434 was more like 40 hp...? If so, it should handle about 15KVA gen fairly well. It could probably run a 25 KVA, but that is too much for continous duty. The 15 should be plenty for any home. Some farms still get by with 15. Onan seems to make a fairly good alternator type generator. I think going to cummins.com will give you more info. HTH.

Another site lists the 424 at 36hp pto but didnt have the specs on 434 so it should be more.

 My International/Case 434 is a compact in reply to tlak, 09-27-2004 03:30:45
powered by a 3 cylinder Mitsubishi 18hp diesel...late 70"s model I think. Smooth little tractor, and all I need around the grove and farm, but I am concerned about enough power to run a pto generator. My other tractor is a 1950 Cub, so I"m sure it won"t spin a generator. Was told I would need a 10-12 Kw generator for the heat pump/AC unit. Good idea about the window air conditioners...had considered that, and have even built a "bunkhouse" out in the barn with 12000 btu window unit through the wall, but have not gotten to test it out yet.
Thanks for all the replies and good advice. Maybe Jeanne will be the last storm this year and I won"t need a generator for a long time....nah, just dreamin"!!!

I've had many generators, and welder generators, but i like my 15kw (18kw serge) Winpower pto generator best!!

You need (2) pto hp per 1,000 watts to run a pto generator. SO, to get max out of a 15KW gen set you need 30 pto HP..

I power my 15,000 watt pto generator with either my Kubota compact, 30-06 Deutz, or my 4650 AGCO, depending how much power i need to make at that time.

You can run a bigger gen set with a smaller tractor, but you can only pull power out of the gen set up to what ever hp the tractor running it makes at the pto.

One last thing, for "continuous duty", you should NOT pull any more than 80% of the max pto hp out of your tractors pto.

Robert
