Out of curiosity -- why would you want the old style wheel bearing grease?

The old style wheel bearing grease is to be used for a number of purposes. 1. In wheel bearings of an old tractor with seals that will not hold more modern grease but still works just fine with the "old stuff". 2. As an aid in the assembly of needle bearings as mentioned by someone else. 3. To hold the fuel pump push rod in place while changing a mschanical fuel pump in a "small block" Chevy engine. 4. For LONG TERM storage of steel and metal parts. (It stays in place, is easier to get a uniform coating on the parts and is easy to clean off with solvent). 5. It works quite well in the old worn "screw cap" grease fittings. 6. It works well as an assembly aid and lube when installing "packing gland" type seals. 7. A small "blob" of it on the tip of a screwdriver will "pick up" a small part (even a brass part)in a difficult to reach place. It is nice to have around for other purposes as the need arrises. (I just like to have some available and now I am OUT, should have stocked up when it was still available.) Thanks to all the replies.

Took the words right out of my mouth. I"m going to guess that an owner"s or service manual recommended it for wheel bearings, which I have seen in my Ford and/or MF manuals. I remember using it years ago; real stringy and stuck to the bearings real well.....but technology is alive and well and better products are out there. Valvoline makes a nice Synthetic.

I have one gallon pail left that I allow no one else near. It is a very poor wheel bearing grease compared to modern products, but nothing else works better for holding things like needle bearings/thrust washers in place for transmission assembly. Some of the new #4-5-6 grease may do as well, but I know this product works. That 50 year old tub of grease is used only for those special jobs. Im 56,so it should see me out. :)
