I don't wanna mislead my fellow lover of old iron, and while Kim is looking at site changes, I'd like to opt for a spell checker. Got a couple-ah words I don't wanna get misunderstood cause of mispellin:

gonna, wanna, hafta, sorta, coudda, fixin, doin, makin, layin, iffin (Dell WA), youuas, tah..... and a couple more I can't remember.

Thanks,

Mark

(I'd betcha ya'll think I'ma kiddin)

May not be a bad idea. I try to do well, but at times know that I'm about to blow something out of the water. I f I know is going to be real bad, I minimize on-line, bring up Word, type the word I intended, and let it tell me how badly I did before it gives me a list of correct possibilities. Can get tedious (spell that right?), but gives the impression I'm a little more intelligent than I am.

Might save a step, fellers. And, might make us all appear smarter than I look, which might take some of the fun out of it.

That's right. We are who we are and I wouldn't trade it for the world. My problem is I had a stroke about three years agop and my brain, while working in only 2nd gear, stilll gets to going faster than my fingers can, and then my fingers want to het two or three keays at a time and this conserned EElectric comput4er registers them all and well you get thte picture. Folks, Spell check may be OK, but it does not enhance the thoughts conveyed by the person posting a comment or idea. Syntax also, while making it easier to follow, still doesn"t change the central theme. Neither syntax nor spelling is a gauge to which to measure the intellegence of anyone. None of us are professional stenographers or typists. We are all just a bunch of guys who love Old iron, and few of us ever used a keyboard until we started fooling around with one of these danged computers, but we have some pretty good mechanics who have a n awful lot of good information and experiences to share with the rest of us regardless of how well or how badly they spell. Those who would use either spelling ability, syntax, or punctuation to measure intellegence exposes an inner flaw within themselves. Language is nothing more than a catylist to implement communication, and the biggest roadblock to communication is not spelling, syntax or punctuation, but the illusion that communication happened in the first place. To put that into plain language, communication is the ability to get ones point across, and that it was recieved. I know brilliant people who can communicate well, but you"d never be able to judge it by their spelling. Some of the smartest among us are not good spellers, but that doesn"t make them dumb. Conversly, I have seen perfect spellers who can"t express themselves in a way that their thought is well conveyed. This site has people from all geographic areas, and all walks of life, and many times the vernacular seeps its way into the conversation which may be different from that of someone else from somewhere else. You will never ever see me be so condecending so as to correct someone elses spelling, syntax or punctuation. While I do try to review what I type, I miss some typos, spelling, and punctuation errors in my text. The way this format is set up, sometimes it won"t allow a person to make changes once the submit button has been pushed. I think we, or at least some of us, should lighten up and look past spelling, syntax, and punctuation, and address the question or point being made. By the way, has anyone noticed that there is no such thing as an apostrophe here in posting on this forum? It always comes up as quotation marks. Or maybe I"m just dumb.

Like I said. When I want to refer to something (out of the ordinary usually) I want to spell it correctly so it can be recognized. I'm a pretty gifted speller, learned phonics (did I spell it right) in grade school. One of the best things the nuns taught me. Second best thing was taking a typing class. Got a wife out of that, among other things like being able to compete in the word processor world when the computer came of age.

I wanna spell check BAAAAA AWWWWLLLLL .

I don't think anybody is being judged on how smart or stupid they are because of a spell check. Misspelling can change the meaning of a sentence. Somebody on here tried to talk country and it was so hard to read I quit reading their posts. Spell check would just be a tool to use or not.

Here is a easy to use spell check utility for web pages.

Link

Nice thing about it is that it is not automatic so people could use it only if they wanted to.

Not a bad idea, but, I know a lot of times I use "bad grammer" sometimes it is faster and easier than tryin to figure spelling. Heck, I am just an old farm boy who has been accused of not speakin proper nor spellin proper and most people can figure it out. The nice thing about this forum, it is kinda like talkin in person, if you get all proper with language and spellin, kinda takes away from the personality of the forum. The big advantage would be when my brain gets to thinkin faster than my fingers can peck.

Spell check is just one more cruch to lean on. How is anyone ever going to learn if the computer does it all for you.The rest of the world is kicking our rears in school test scores. I'm the first to admit that spelling and math were never drilled into my head in school like they needed to be and I forgot half of what did get in.I'm not good at spelling or grammer but hope that by using a dictionary to look up stuff when I can and others correcting me maybe I can improve.

I really do want a spell check and I thought this would get some responses so Kim might see that lots of us want it and get us one.

I don't want to have to script my posts in Word to get a spell checker then post here.

And it distracts from the authenticity of a response if the author misspells every other word or so..... .like geez if the guy can't even spell, can I believe his response?

Mark

Sides, I'd bet Indy has as many sayins as Texas and I'd like to hear some of 'em.

Well, sad but true. I catch myself in daily conversations (in a professional environment) where lots of slang and jargons are the commonplace. But they are quick, require no thought (etiquette, punctuation, grammar, spelling), and they communicate. So, they get used.

Funny, when I talk to a suppler or customer elsewhere in the US, first thing they do is ask "Ya'll from Dallas? Grin
