Just saw a streamer on Fox news that California has outlawed hand weeding of crops because it is too strenous;have they completely lost there minds? What can we expect from the land of fruits and nuts next?

So now the weeds are safe in CA. Chalk up another victory for homeland security.

I thought I'd try something really radical, and actually research this one instead of just spouting off.

It only outlaws requiring laborors to hand weed. It is not a blanket prohibition. Senate Bill 587, sponsored by C-OSHA (that's California-Ocupational Safety and Health Administration). If you wish to weed your garden by hand, you are free to do so.

There is a short handle prohibition for employees in California, just like the ones in Texas, New Mexico and Illinois. The short handle hoe law went into effect in 1975, the short handled tool law went into effect in 1978.

This is all driven by rising medal costs and unemployment costs due to back injuries, both chronic and acute, resulting from laborors staying stooped over for hours on end in the fields.

There is no charcoal grill ban in California. What there actually is, is a prohibition on the old fashioned lighter fluids in the southern coastal counties (LA). The new lighter fluid is lower in VOC.

Don't give politicians in any state and at any level too much credit for common sense. If you do, then you will be terribly disappointed.

Right now we are going through a change in the name of our road because it has the word SQUAW in it. So the spineless politicians that bend and bow to every special interest group have decided we need to rename the road. When I was growing up the word SQUAW just meant a female indian, nothing derogatory.

Dan,

Could I suggest a name for the road?

How's about "Brown Round" road? :>)

I had several suggestions that would not have been adopted and many of which cannot be printed here.

The name they decided on is one that I agree with. It is the name of a gentleman that actually lived in the area and owned a grocery store at the intersection of the road and the main highway in the area.

I actually agree with the politicians (yuk). I must be softening up in my senior years.

We had a road in our township re-named a few years ago. It used to be called "devils elbow rd" for the sharp "elbow" turn at the bottom. Well, a group of religous nuts thought that satin himself would appear and cast them down into damnation if they lived on or near that road, so they complained to the twp stupid-visors. The road starts in our TWP and ends in another, so our twp changed the name to just "elbow rd". The other twp was less inclined, and left it as "Devils Elbow". So if you do not wish to be stricken down for eternity, you better not travel to the other end of Elbow rd or cross the Anthony Township line.

Don't give up just yet. We are "blessed" with an Indian reservation here. However, they go on the warpath whenever they are called "Indians". The term they like is "Native Americans". In fact, all the news media are required to use that term.

However, "Famous Dave" (yes, of barbecue sauce fame) has no problem cashing his check for his role as "Assistant Secretary of the Department of the Interior for Indian Affairs". Go figure.

If the indians would just read Webster's definition of NATIVE they would find that anyone that was born in this country is in fact and by definition a "NATIVE AMERICAN". Go figure. If they want a term that will separate them from the rest of us they need to come up with something other than that.

Still does (denote a female indian). Just like "Brave" denotes a male, and "Chief" denotes where the buck stops (not really, it's at the Chief's squaw... she's in charge and he only gets to do what she lets him. Don't believe me just ask your wife). Grin.

I like to take drives through crop areas and general rural country side. I'm beginning to wonder if maybe all weeding has been banned everywhere. Crops don't look too bad, but headlands, hedge rows, drainage ditches, etc are just a seed production area for weeds. Some of these corn, soybean and wheat guys plant more weeds every year than they kill.

Not sure if this is true or not but I've been told that CA banned charcoal grilles because they pollute. No doubt that will clean up that nasty air in LA!

they outlawed "short hoes" over 25 yrs ago--i dont know how in the hell they do some of the work needing to be done--but with airplanters and pelleted lettuce and carrot seed --there is likely little thinning to be done. and seldom is there any weeds anyway. but damn--do you suppose we can convince our wives that only women can "weed" now?
