I'm a little late here, but I am in complete agreement with Ron. You must know how to write and speak correctly. You may have the idea for the world's greatest mouse trap, but if you can't communicate that to the guy who is going to finance your research, you're not going to sell it! Now, nobody start counting my errors! Jim.

DRD: The free advice you just received is about as good as free advice gets. I urge you to use it wisely. Including the post about grammer and spelling. My cousin is one of the best mechanics I've ever known. His formal education however, was quite lacking. He landed a good job with a big paper company and his mechanical skills were put to extensive use. His company sent him all over the country to keep equipment operating. He lamented on his retirement however, that due to his lack of good writing skills, he was kept from getting some good promotions.

I agree with the real ron,I ran an equipment shop and have found that the people with poor grammer, spelling and writing skills generally don't care about doing an assignment or job correctly, but just getting it done, this attitude follows them all through life. Now is the time to make them ashamed of it while they still have time to change.A lot of time the individual spends more time being a wise@ss than paying attention.I say tell it like it is.

Dan- I attended Riverland in Austin for diesel mechanics, and I got to know Bruce and Bob pretty well in Mankato. I was also very active in PAS and got to know Pete very well too. If you want to interview me, send me a list of questions to my email, and I will gladly fill them out for you. Best regards, j meyer

Dan,I worked at two Ford dealerships during the 1970's.But farm equiptment and everything else has changed so much since then.I would advise you to visit some dealerships in your area.Talk to the owner or the shop foreman /service manager.Tell him what is required of you for your class. If your cordial about it i'll bet he'll have a mechanic or two that will be happy to talk to you.You may have to visit several places to get all the interveiws you need.Be nice, attentive.and inquisitive.Ask all your questions and thank them for their time.Dan use your chance at an education wisely. What you learn or "don't" learn now will affect the rest of your life.Make the very best of this opportunity.I was raised in a broken home and had to leave school and go to work before i graduated. You would not believe the opportunities for good jobs i lost because of lack of education.Only when i got my GED and took Trade school courses did my jobs and income start getting better.Take advantage of everything you can get in way of education. You'll never be sorry that you did.I'm sorry i did'nt mean to give a sermon,i just like for young folks not to make the mistakes that i did.

I suppose the dealers in Mankato (Case & JD) get hit pretty heavily if that is a typical class assignment.

The folks at Smith's Mill (Ford/ Agco) are pretty nice, as well as Zins (JD) in Nicollet and the Ford dealer in New Ulm. Oh, and White dealer in Judson. All those are 15-30 minutes away.

Dan,
The first thing you need to do is to uncover your email address, otherwise no one can get to you. you might need to wait a couple of weeks for any help, around here it is harvest and a lot of ag mechanics are working 8-12 hour days.

6.5" of rain the past week, he would have a couple days. .... Once it dries out tho, going to be hard to find a mechanic not working or sleeping...

I don't know how to say this any other way so I'll just say it... if you are going to be looking for a job, take an English class. With the employment situation being as it is, right now you have no chance against someone who understands grammar, composition, and spelling.

I counted at least 14 errors in your post and may have missed some.

Ron;I have to agree with you on this one.Any little thing that helps you get a leg up on the competition is a plus. My English skills are far from correct so please feel free to correct me at anytime as it may help me to do better. Ag student don't take this as a personal attack as some of the blame lies on our poor school system and their emphasis on sports and not on the 3 R's

P.S. I'm at home so hopefully my spelling is better as I keep a dictionary handy and even use it some.

Indy, Nawww, say it right out; Ron-Ron is a blow-hard and a nit picker. He is ever ready to play the spoiler. Put your self in this young mans shoes Ron. He's looking for a little approval and a good word. It takes guts to toss it out in this pack of curmudgions. How 'bout if you actually responded positively to Dan's request, and in so doing strongly suggested he seek some assistance with his written communication. "...take an English class" Holy cow, the dude is 18! His public education has included many "English" class's, and look where it's landed him; getting ambushed by you! So obviously something more effective is in order to actually assist this young guy. Take a page out of the book of Allen in NE or Cowman, or Paul in Mich or Hugh or Busdriver or Indydirtfarmer or any of a dozen others. These gentlemen teach us all volumes by what they don't say. (not knocking public school's, J.F.Kerry attended St Pauls prep in NH, and listening to him communicate is like scrubbing the acid out of an old battery box!)
