OT - Boot recommendations

I'm a big active guy and no matter now much or how little I spend on work boots I'm lucky to get a year out of them. Just killed another pair this morning. I don't wear them out, I'm talking about physical damage like holes through the sole, toe ripped off the sole, etc.

Anybody share some recommendations for boots that will last?

Thanks!

Nothing but Redwings. Just don't ever try to get on an airplane wearing them. Those TSA folks are real jumpy. I think all Redwings have a steel shank. Jim,

You wear them- just have to run the shoes through the xray machine...

Mason Shoes. Several styles have soles that are guaranteed to outlast the uppers.
Good Shoes and an Excellent company to deal with.

Red Wings. Made in the USA. Available in almost any size and width. In fact, I think you can order some styles in two different sizes if your feet are different sizes. The new "Supersole" is just about indestructible.

Some things to remember when buying Red Wings:

1. Don't settle for shoes that don't fit. Most dealers don't like to stock narrow or wide widths; you may have to special order.

2. Red Wings are available in a lot of different styles and leathers. The most durable is the oil-tanned top grain leather. Some of the other uppers are not particularly waterproof or durable.

3. Red Wing has a habit of discontinuing styles. If you find a pair of Red Wings that you really like, don't wait until they're completely shot before you replace them; you might find that you can't get them anymore. (This has happened to me more than once.)

Another excellent boot is Danner; Danner is now owned by Red Wing and I believe they're still made in the USA.

Georgia steel toe western boots do well for me. I buy a new pair about every 18 months or so. I break the new pair in gradually just wearing for sunday and casual and when i throw my beatup old work boots away buy a new pair, wear the good ones for work and buy a new pair for casual.

One brand I have not seen mentioned is WHITE. They make some logging boots that are tough as nails - all hand made or they were. Pr. will run about $300-$400.

When living in the PNW they were the ONLY boot to have. Now that I live in the South not any place to order but on-line or thru my Dad.

Whites are what 90% of the Wildland Fire Fighter wear and they are tough on boots! I wear Daners myself and Nicks are another good boot for fire fighting. I paid allmost 300.00 for my Daners but when you spend 14-16 plus hours a day in them for 14 days straite they better be good boots. Had my Daners for several years might try out a pair of whites when these die but it will be a long time I take good care of my boots and wash & oil them often, no Silicon on mine! Fires are hard on boots. Mark H.

What do you oil your boots with. I think most any boot would last longer if they were oiled. Mine tend to get wet alot and when they dry they get hard and crack. Oiling would prevent this I assume. Thanks

Redwings are the way to go. Around here the R.W. dealers keep track of all your purchases, boot size, and when you bought them last. I can go into my local R.W. store and give my name and in 5 minutes I have a brand new pair of boots that fit and feel good the next day after work. I do not mind paying alittle more for quality. Besides that, at least they aint made in China.

Get yourself a pair of Wolverines with the duroshock sole. Like you I normally go through a pair a year with no problem, even in the Wolverines. The last pair however are still going strong going on the two year mark. I don't know what "model" number they are but their the tan colored pigskin ones with 200 grams of Thinsolate. I was kinda iffy on them at first because of the insulation, but my feet have been the most comfortable both summer and winter than they ever have. When it's hot there is just enough to wick the moisture away from your feet, and unless it's REALLY cold just enough to keep your feet comfortable when your active. Too the pigskin must be more waterproof than any of the other leathers because even when I've been slogging though mud all day, getting them oil soaked while working on a piece of equipment, etc my feet have yet to get even the slightest bit wet. The only thing I don't like is they have the bonded type sole and the edges tend to tear off in about 6 months if your constantly climbing on stuff and putting your whole weight on the edge of the sole. Beyond that you'll not find a better boot. Dad will wear nothing but them since he had to have his toe amputated due to an accident nearly 15 years ago. He says the Duroshock sole is the only one he has found that doesn't agrivate the scar tissue left over from the accident. Hope you find yourself a good boot. There is nothing worse on a man than coming home after a long day with his feet hurting from bad pair of boots.

I wear Redwing lineman's boots. Will kill your feet at first, but once get broke in, are comfortable. I mink oiled the crap out of them, and turned my white socks black for about a year, but i can get into water up to almost my knees, no leaks. The problem with Redwings, all in stock (12") go for $200.00. Those lineman's have to be ordered and go for about $250.00. I often work in coal fields at power plants, and coal will dryout and corrode about anything. This pair has lasted me two years, still going. The last pair was about two years as well, until one day took a step out of a mixture of nearly frozen coal and muck, and one of my soles stayed in the mess, no warning. I've also got a pair of $40.00 Tom McCan "Texas Steer" cheapies that I got from Kmart one weekend when needed a quick pair. They're about a year old, are comfortable, have taken a pretty good beating (including my lab chewing on), and are just starting to pull apart - and I just noticed, made in China (Hmm?, don't care for that).

You are pipsqueeks! You are nothing but little boys to me. I'm 10'2" and tip the scales at 650lbs. I have size 27 feet and I go barefoot! Shoes are for babies, boots are for little men.
I must go now. Time for my pedacure. If you really are wearing the boots every day, and you are in fact working when you're wearing; then one year is plenty. If your boots are worn out then the dogs are taking a beating. Take a tip from the running crowd; 500 miles on the PF Flyers, no matter what they look like; time for a new pair. Donate the retirees to Goodwill!

Ron,

I might not be as big as you are, but I'm 6'2", weigh 200 lb. and wear size 13 shoes. I've used Mason boots for nearly thirty years now, and I don't even bother trying anything else. I buy 6" high boots. The ones that I buy currently cost just a little bit less than $100 (when I started using their shoes they cost about $40).

I seldom polish them or put any kind of waterproofing on them. I've never yet worn out a sole or heel on any pair, and the uppers always last 3 or 4 years. The shoestrings usually last a couple of years so my only expense between new ones is to buy a set of shoestrings every once in a while.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

I have been wearing my current pair of Red Wings for over 2 1/2 years now. The exact same pair of lacers before them I still have and use when I am gonna get wet. They are the best boots I have ever owned. If the leather is maintained and taken care of like Red Wing states, they will last. If they don't talk to them because they will back up their product. Not much backup from the Wal-Mart boots.

One thing that helps my boots last longer is to
rotate them. I"ve heard it said that there is
something about leather and you shouldnt wear it
everyday. When I was in the army we were issued
2 pair of boots for that reason.

You're right about that. I remember those days. Give the boots a day to dry and air out, but I don't practice that part of what the Army taught me. Somewhere in the attic is a duffle bag that's been locked since the day I put it up there 25 years ago. In it are two pairs of jumps that I'll bet mice and spiders probably turned into condominiums. Hmm? One day I'll look, maybe, maybe not. Maybe I'll just put that duffle bag out into a field and take a couple of shots at it first, just to see if a coon or something else comes out before I open it.

I always had good luck with Red Wings. Even in constant exposure to dirt, oil, fuel, water and the like as a diesel techician. I could usually get a year and a half out of them, which when you're in them 60+ hours a week, isn't too bad. The last time I wore a pair out, I started wearing hiking-shoe type shoes, and my back starts giving me trouble when they get close to worn out, which takes well under a year. I'm going back to Red Wings with steel toes and steel shanks in the soles. Plus, if you buy good quality work boots, you can get them resoled and/or reheeled depending on how they're made.

This yr. I bought some Georgia Ranch & Farm boots. I have always liked their hunting boots and this is the first pair of work boots. This yr. is the first try and so far so good. Very, very comfortable.

Also, this yr. for work boots I went with slip on vs. lace up. I love lace up but I hate having to remove them everytime I forget something in the house. Mrs. ShepFL is not to generous when walking in her house with work boots.

I must agree with Shep those Ranch & Garden Slip on's are a great boot for every day around the yard wear. They are not what Ron is looking for as far as a Heavy duty work boot, I got mine in Wickenburg AZ for kicking around out in the desert.I will be getting another pair when these wear out.

ShepFL wrote, "Mrs. ShepFL is not to generous when walking in her house with work boots." I saw where a guy solved this problem by finding some light blue pullover thingies (like what is worn in operating rooms) and he slips those over his boots when going into the house for a short time.

In a pinch, it might work to use bread loaf bags. Vets, AI technicians, etc. use plastic slipovers when on calls. Many large hog farmers keep a supply at the barns, for visitors to use. Might find them in vet/livestock supply catalogs.

I'll have to second (or third or fourth or ...) the Redwing recommendation. They are the only boots I have worn that feel good right off the shelf. I have two pair -- the newer is for dress occasions and the older is for work. They are expensive, but well worth it.

I've had similar results from boots, just dont hold up. I'm 6'1", 245, and wear a size 13 so Walmart brand wont work (at least here they stock to 12).

I normally got a year out of Red wing Pecos slip ons. Wore them for years. Switched to Justins 5 years ago (work style lacer) and been well pleased. Got 3 years out of them but they make my feet sweat. Wolverines seem to wear even better for me (and Caterpillar). I got a pair of them when I got the Justins and they are still in service.

Also the make a hard rubber dip you can put of the toes to keep from wearin' or pullin' apart. Boots cost me well over 200.00 plus the dip is about $%-50, I think. I have worn these about 18 months now, they are still very confortable to wear.

Well worth it. The soles are very work bootish i.e. you can scrape them off, definitely not the lug hikers.
