What are the general rules for a cylinder head re-torque? should the engine be hot? Should I crack each bolt loose and then retorque it? One at a time of course.

Unless specifically called out in the manual not to, I always retorque. (Years ago I didn't retorque a Rambler American engine and ended up blowing a head gasket -- cost me a lot of time, some money and a little embarrassment.)

What should the torque value be on a John Deere "A" head bolt?

I don"t retorque the head bolts either, although I"ve read lots of folks that do. When installing the head (initial) I DO go back and double-check all the bolts for correct torque.
The torque on the John Deere A head bolts---- 125 ft. lbs, and be sure to use the lead washers beneath the bolts!

What should the torque value be on the nuts that bolt the block up to the crankcase?

you should always retorque the head when hot. i usually do it after about 10 hrs of use. i know people that retorque after 1 hr use also. do it in the same sequince that you tightened them in also.

I know we are talking tractors here and (almost) all have cast iron heads, but for those who also work on other engines - never retorque an aluminium head while hot, let it cool completely! Unless the manual says diferent, of course.
