I bought a JD4440 with 5900 hours. It dynos 142 hp, runs and starts well. I recently changed both thermostats because it did not warm up well. I noticed that since I have changed the thermostats the tractor has excessive oil blowby (which it did not have before the replacement), essentially once warm and when running at low speed (# 700 rpm). Could anyone give me explanations ?

Check the water pump. to shorten a long story JD4050, blah blah blah must be hole in sleeve, blah blah blah, put in new engine kit blah blah blah, opps bad seal in mechanical water pump putting water into engine oil, dang that was one pricy water pump.

It might be something as simple as the motor oil you are using. Some oil evaporates at a lower temp then others. Try Rotella or Mobil 1300 15W-40 and see if you still get a lot of blowby.

I agree with what John said. It's a real common problem with some John Deere's of that era. I had the same problem with my 4400 combine. Must have been some bad metal in a few lots of sleeves. I always use John Deere coolant conditioner now. I evens out the ph in the water, and neutralizes other bad stuff in there as well. Jim.

Watch the radiator level closely. If you appear to be loosing some coolant, that blowby MIGHT actually be steam coming out of the breather tube. Poor coolant upkeep can cause an "acid" condition to form in the coolant. That leads to a further problem known as "electralisis" (SP) The acid in the coolant, combined with dirt particles in the cooling system will erode the base of the cylinder sleeves, causing small pinholes in said sleeve. The holes won't allow the cooling system to pressurize. Also, without coolant, the sending unit doesn't show the engine warming up. In actuality, it is OVERHEATING. Might not be your problem, but a tractor I bought last year had just the same symtoms you described, and had two holes in a sleeve. Very "fixable" if caught soon enough. John
