Farmall H won't start

Trying to help a buddy get his H running again. It was running fine and now it won't start. We checked for fuel problems and it seems gas is getting to the carb. We pulled a plug and tried cranking with the plug touching the block but could not see any spark, does that mean a bad coil? Do they just quit like that? Any other things we should check?

Thanks for any info!

Thanks to everyone for your responses. The culprit was a broken wire inside the meter box, so no power to the coil. The whole thing needs to be rewired anyway, so this will give us an excuse.

I used to have a Farmall H. This is what I did when it didnt want to start, pull the air pipe off the cleaner may be restricting too much, then pull out all the plugs and get some sandpaper and clean the carbon off of them, clean off with gasoline, then reinstall them. Should start right up.

Randy-when was the last time it had a good tune up,maybe a fresh set of plugs, points and condenser will cure it, if not you didnt waste your money, condensers can give you LOTS of headaches-keep us posted

Randy you need to tell us whether it has a magneto or distributor. And then me or some of the guys will tell you from there what to look for.

Sorry, it has a distributor.
Should we be able to see spark from the coil wire touching the block?

You should se a spark when cranking with the power on, if the HT leaad from the coil is held about 3-5mm from the block. It will not spark if it is touching the block (no air gap to jump).
If there is no spark, it doesn"t mean the coil is bad. The most likely fault is with the contact points if no spark, or moisture in the distributor cap if there is. May be an issue with power to the coil, rotor in dist cap, condenser and others, as well as coil could be bad. Needs testing out before spending. Contact point set is cheaper than coil, especially if you then have to buy the poiints as well!!!
Good luck and re-post with what you find.
Regards, RAB

Ok I will tell him to hold off on the coil as a last resort and pick up a set of points and condenser to see if that cures anything.
