Tire type question?

My 300 Utillity needs new tires on the front. Can't keep them up with green slime and other leak fixers anymore. They look like they could be the orginal ones from 55. Anyway the tractor has a front end loader that I use quite abit. I also mow about 10 acres with it. Would I be better off with a 6 ply truck tire rather then a ribbed tractor tire? It seams to me that a regular type tire would be easier to steer with the loader on.
I don't have power steering so I need all the help I can get. Whats your thoughts on the subject?

How much weight do you hang on the back to counter-balance the loader? That is by far the easiest way to improve steering with a front loader. It is rarely mentioned on the forum, so we don"t know whether the loaders are counter-balanced already or not. Once drove 20 miles on the road with power harrow on a tractor, which lifted the front wheels off the road at anything over gentle throttle and 5 mph and the smallest of bumps! That was not fun either.
Go widest tyres but bear in mind the king pin spindles and wheel bearing loads on these old tractors. Any wear in the king-pins will also make steering harder

Go wider with maybe a wider rim and floatation tires so they don't sink in the ground so much when loaded.

On my loader tractor, I use a 12 ply (General?) tire that is designed for the front of a back-hoe. They will withstand MUCH more abuse than any conventional truck tire or farm tractor tire. It all depends on what you plan on doing with it..... ..John

Check www.millertire.com to be sure but for MOST tractor fronts you can use 4 rib implement tires in 8 or even 10 ply. I made the switch especially to make the tractor grab better when turning with a full loader bucket. The difference is very noticeable.

Truck tires don't have the ribs tractors need so I would suggest you forget that idea. As far as easier steering goes... loader tractors require power steering. Someone else might know if a retrofit PS unit is available for your tractor.

You'll find that the ribs will steer easier than a truck-style tread when there isn't anything on the bucket. Without power steering nothing is going to help a lot when the loader has a load on. But hi-ply tires will not crush as much and use higher pressure,so they'll turn easier than 4 or 6 plies. you can get 8 and 10 ply tractor rib treads or find somne trailer tires with High plies-they have narrow tread usually.

3-rib tractor tires are the easiest to steer on firm surfaces, makes less diff in mud.

Used truck tires are pretty cheap.

Take your pick.

Hi Randy,

I have marginal PS on my 340U and changed from a truck tire to the 3-rib. The 3-rib is the way to go. Cost me $100pr for new Firestones 6ply. I filled them too 55psi and they work well.
