I see advertisements for John Deer 4020s showing the horsepower as being 90 or 95 or 100 horsepower. Even from the same year. Is this right? I would have thought that they would all have the same horsepower ratings.

Depends how the injector pump is set. My'67 that I bought in '72, after overhauled, was rated 94 but cranked 110 on the dyno. Ran that way with no problems for many years. Had 8700 hours when I traded it for a 4430.

Remember also that advertising hype around that period may well have meant power at flywheel being thrown around, rather than pto power.

As previously mentioned, they vary with gas/diesel/lp/powershift/syncrorange/ect. When the 4020 was introduced in 1963 (as a '64 model) it was 91 HP ((powershift diesel) In 1966, it recieved a few minor updates. Power rating was increased to 94 (?). Then in 1969, they stepped it up to 96HP. Most were actually closer to 100. John

If I remember correctly, the 4020 was rated at 90 horsepower from the factory, but the vast majority of them would run closer to 100 as delivered.

There were different HP ratings depending on gasoline, propane or diesel engine and if equipped with syncrorange or powershift trans.

I forgot about that, the power shift did seem to eat up quite a bit of power.
