I've inherited a 200 acre dryland wheat farm. I want to include a few hogs and a few steers on the farm. I need to get a tractor that will handle a wide variety of chores as well as work the fields. I have heard that the J.D. (Diesel) 3010/3020/4010/4020 models are appropriate. I need suggestions and/or better ideas. I need to hear from some pros out there.....Thanks for your time and assistance.

A John Deere 4020 will put dirt or manure or any thing else all over any AC mentioned in this article, and do it real easy. Easier to handle and drive or any thing else you can think of.

Think size, the 4020 will handle a loader ok but with intentions I believe he has older buildings with smaller doors and the smaller size AC will fit thru a door that the 4020 is to large to go thru. Like them all but need to keep in mind size to fit thru openings, he may need two tractors with one the size of a JD 1010 or 1020 that would go thru a 6 ft. high door, that 4020 can not do that

All I can do is give some things to thimk about, I am from Ohio so things are different here. First question, how much time are you going to have to work it? 2 hours per night after anouther job? Type of tillage or planting equipment you will be needing to determan HP needed? Will you need a loader for the manure on that tractor or have anouther loader tractor or skid stear loader? Or will it be confignment on livestock with liquid manure? All these questions need answering to determan what size and type you need before trying to find a model to look at. Large field work only or small utility type for livestalk? What dealers or suport for that make or model is avaible in your area, want dealer suport in a 1/2 hour not 5 hours away? John Deere mentionad good for field work but not good for the livestalk as to large to manuver, the AC good for the livestalk but too small for the field work as I would guess all that 200 acres would have to be worked and planted in a 1 week time window. Just questions you need to determin answers to before deciding on model.

The 4020 was, and still is, one of the most popular tractors ever. There are thousands still in use on farms across the country. With the number of them still in use, Mother Deere keeps the parts inventory up, and easy to get. That is important. The 3020 is still popular too, but not like the 4020. The 4020 would make you a great tractor, as well as a great investment. The value will remain high for years to come, considering the price of NEW tractors. I have a 1971 4020 with over 8000 hours. It's on the second engine, but the powershift tranny shows no signs of letting up. They were great tractors in it's day, and they are STILL great tractors. You would be well served by getting a nice 4020. John

Depends on how much time you have to farm. I would discount Sid's idea on the D15 a bit, but his other's would certainly fit for the average guy, along with your mention of the JD tractors. Check out the difference between 10 and 20 series- all the 10s have the synchro tranny, vs the synchro and powershift option on the 20 series. AC models have the Power Director which gives you Hi and Lo speed with live power. JD would have the independent pto, but they cost more. Many other good options available- just check them all out ahead of a purchase.

I am sure they would be. Along the lines of Allis Chalmers the D-15 or D-17 or the 170 and 175 tractors would be a good choice. My opinion for what it is worth.
