Time to vent some frustration. By and large the Postal Service probably does a decent job considering the number of pieces that they handle BUT back in January I had two pay checks, one regular-one OT, that failed to show up. I contacted the office and they assured me that they were mailed on time. The checks were cancelled and they sent wire transfers and everything was well. The checks with January 29 post marks finally made it my mail box in June, about three days apart.
In August I got a "Time Sensitive" letter from the FAA. It was mailed in March !!!2003!!!
On August 8 I mailed estate checks out to the family. One member still has not recieved his.
Can anyone else relate to this?

I sent a tractor part to a fellow last Summer using USPS. It was packed reasonably well(I always pack for the worst treatment). The fellow received it and part of it was missing and it had a tag saying it had been damaged and if something was missing to contact a regional lost mail depot. He did and never received it. I tried to make it up to him by sending him another part, but it wasn't exactly like the first one, so he sent it back. I have $35-40 in shipping costs and the fellow has bashed my education, blamed me for not packing it good enough, etc. all because the USPS lost his package. I've been a good sport and taken the name calling, but it's hard to bite my lip when someone talks to you like that! Anyway, I learned a good lesson. Pay the insurance even if the party you sold it to doesn't want it.

I have maybe a unique perspective on this. I manage a credit union that was founded in 1928 by postal workers to serve postal workers. Now we have a broader field of membership, but our main core of members is still postal workers. In other words, I deal with a lot of different USPS employees, from carriers to sorters to management. I can tell you that there are a lot of quality people working for the USPS but there is also a lot of dead wood. It seems impossible to fire a bad employee. A USPS employee has to just about kill someone to get terminated and have it stick. Otherwise the union always jumps in and gets them their job back. Also, there are a lot of frustrated USPS employees here because of one Hitleresque manager in the local P.O. There doesn't seem to be any way to get rid of the guy. I've even had USPS employees (who are also on my CU board of directors) talk to our congressmen about what it takes to get a bad manager removed.

For my own ebay selling activities, I like Priority Mail for items less than 3 lbs. Anything bigger I use FedEx Ground. I quit using UPS because whenever I would calculate the shipping cost on their website based on zipcodes and package size, the price would always be higher when I went to UPS to actually send the thing. With FedEx Ground I never have a surprise and I've never had a shipment go bad. Plus FedEx Ground is routinely cheaper than UPS.

On the other hand, I have sent 2 packages to a friend in IRAQ. The first was 11 pounds and the second was 9 pounds. They both arrived in Skips hands in less than 7 days. I sent them in USPS Priority Mail boxes that you can pick up at the post office. Just plain amazing.

They are far too busy handling the JUNK mail to get the important stuff on time.

Here's one for you - had an order from a firm in Seattle. They delivered it to DHL on Sept. 3rd. Also gave me a tracking number for the DHL shipment. It arrived in their Ohio sorting facility where it languished until Sept. 10, at which time it arrived in Grand Rapids, MI. Later that day they transferred it to the USPS, who delivered it the next day. GO FIGURE! (I'm about 60 miles from Grand Rapids.)

The USPS does a great job with everything they have to work with. But, every so often there always seems to be a piece of mail that decides on it's own where to go. For instance, last week, one day, after seeing the mailman stop, I went out to get the mail. The one and only item that was delivered to our mail box was a "Certified Mail Return Receipt Card" addressed to someone with different name, different address, different state, different zipcode, with a date from 2 months ago!

I have bought and sold stuff and I find that the regular government surface mail service (Canada Post and US Postal Services) is as good as any carrier and a LOT cheaper. UPS for example charges and arm and a leg and there's always lots of extra charges when things show up at your door. Really, what services don't have some complaints these days government or otherwise?

In general, I think the post office has improved a thousand percent from twenty years ago. However, I have one complaint: I repeatedly get mail for someone else. Our address numbers are the same (pretty unusual number, since it's five digits long), but we're on different roads several miles apart. Every time this happens I take the mail to the post office and complain. They promise not to do it again, but three months later I start getting the wrong mail again. I suspect it's a substitute carrier, but that's no excuse. This has been going on for years. You might have the same problem. The only fix I know of is to get a PO box.

for the most part I get pretty good service. And i use Priority mail a LOT for packages. The only thing I have had trouble with is Parcel Post so I use UPS for heavier packages

Visit your postmaster and file a "non-delivery" complaint every time first-class does not arrive in 5 days. They actually can trace the problem to its source.

Mornin',

About a year ago, I had sent a check to one of our sub-contractors down in Arkansas, I think it was.

Long story short, when she didn't receive it and subsequently filed a complaint, the local USPS office down there traced it right back to the carrier who had handled it.

I have no idea how they did it, other than maybe those sorting machines eye and then log the zip codes? Dunno.

Allan

I cannot complain one bit about the service I get from the post office, they are doing a great job. On the other hand, I will not do business with UPS.

Up here in canada we have the opposite problem. The postal service is great, it's the parcel services that suck! I won't deal with any business anymore that refuses to use the mail. We have no mail delivery here, so we go to the post office in town to pick up our own mail. None of the parcel services here will deliver to a box number or a farm address, instead they deliver it to .....guess where? The POST OFFICE! Where I have a box number! Go figure! The trucks go right by my place, I'm right on a major highway, and my place is clearly marked, and the drivers know me, but they are not allowed to stop. So....I pay them, to..... .use the mail! Yeah, right! I've never once had a problem with a mail shipment in years of doing cross-border business, but I've yet to NOT have a problem or slow delivery when a parcel service is involved. My other pet peeve is the brokerage charges. UPS is worst for this. They tack a hefty percentage of the item's value on for customs brokerage, even where the item is tax and duty free! Example, a US$67 part for a Harley turns into CDN$277 when it's shipped via UPS, and took 5 weeks. Same part using the post office was US$67 + US$8 postage and took 3 days.

Sounds more like you have a bad route carrier... we had one like that for about a month till everybody complained enough and he quit. Not had any problems since then.

In the 1960s and 70s I lived in Switzerland.Often times my mail from the US was sent to Sweden by USPS.Several US citizens have asked me if Swedish is the language of Switzerland, including people in the postal service.I suppose Geography is no longer taught in American schools. I asked my grandson if he had classes in geography, didn't know what it was.Now Social Studies, thus Switzerland is now relocated to Sweden.
