OT..Old oak root..........

Gave up on removing the old oak stump as it was presenting a challange that I could not address. I did however wash it down with a pressure washer and this enabled me to remove (with chainsaw) at least the stump and its upper large roots to below grade. I will now just place fill over it and call it a day. Question. Is there a product that will rot out the remaining roots so as not to have any growth back.If there is, I would sure like to apply before I fill and cover. Many Thanks. Douglas

There was a thread about this situation two weeks ago.

There are stump rotter products on the market, and they are based on potassium nitrate (NKO3) also known as niter or saltpeter.

I am attempting to eliminate a large cherry stump on my property with this method. Many more to go if this experiment works.

Any farm store or lowes shuold have a product to help speed up rotting of stumps. 1st drill a bunch of holes in stump apply product add a little diesel fuel this acts as a wick after 3-4 weeks lite and stump will smolder and burn to root tips . Simple and not DANGEROUS11111

Last I knew, Pramitol was not restricted use herbicide. Buy the pellet form and apply it before filling. If you cut the stump at least 2 feet below the surface, no roots are big enough to cause a problem hole in the future.

Thanks Bus driver, will check to see if I can get it up here in Canada. Do you just spread it over the stump, or drill some holes first and load em up with the stuff.

the only sure fire way to get rid of it once and for all is to dig it out. yes, hand work with a shovel and axe and saw. a lot of hard nasty back-breaking work, but it will be gone forever and then the hole can be filled and tamped and it won't cave in later.

I believe the stuff sold to rot the stump is ammonium nitrate. Unless you confine the stuff and since it is such a small quanity , no explosion will occur when lit after soaking with diesel. It will burn and smoke for a long time. However, I suggest that you spray the roots with Tordon (may be a restricted use herbicide so someone with a applicators license may need to buy it or supply it to you). This will definitely be a hard kill and then they will rot after you cover with dirt. Be sure not to allow the spray to contact any other trees, it will also eventually kill them too. If you cut the roots deep enough they may not need anything to die and rot, and you can ignore everything I wrote.

Hi James, thanks for the reply, I cannot burn this as it is in a very dry situation and would not want to have a lawsuit on my hands. Both you and The RealRon had this suggestion and it would be a good follow up given a differant circumstance. Best regards and many thanks. Douglas

Funny you guys should mention Homeland Security. Past and next few days been working at a place where security kind've high. I said to a guy was working with that for the heck of it might wrap a towel around my head and a sheet around my body just to play a joke on another guy. The guy pointed to a guy who's been hanging out in the same place for a couple of days, so I asked "Yeah, who is that guy anyway". A boss points out the guy's HLS, then points up to some guys that you wouldn't have seen if didn't know to look for them, guys I'd passed several times without noticing and says "they are too, and would shoot" me to bits if I did that. I had no idea security was that high there, but joked that in that case maybe should be a flowery towel and sheet so they'd know I was just joking. He said that maybe they'd only shoot around my feet as I got out of my truck as a joke, and maybe not. Guess no more jokes about those Middle-Eastern types anymore, ever.

When I was a kid, the farm magizines all ways had ads for stuff to rot out stumps. It could have been salt peter, sodium nitrate ??. You were supposed to drill holes into the stump and poor it in. Have no idea if it worked.

He is right about holes ..... . I have some land that was cleared about 30 years ago. I have filled in a bunch of those holes, & have more to do. Worst ones are the ones with just a thin layer of dirt covering a deep hole. Good way for a person or cow to break a leg..... .

Throw 3-4 bags of barbeque charcoal (still in the bags) on top, soak with diesel or kerosene, light, and leave until all the smoke dies down. Might take a day or two and it can't get rained on. That will burn the remaining roots to the point where no regrowth is possible.

And if you have power close by set a small fan near the stump to "force-feed" the coals a little air. It will definitely speed up the process, but might create a few more sparks than you want.
