this is way out in the weeds but what do you farmers right on or own land on both sides of the border do at field work time when you have to gross the border with farm eq. 20 times a day ???? sure hope they don't make you go to a check point each time?

marlowe: Years ago an old farmer who farmed along the border, told me they all go across the border for a wife, (both sides) this keeps everyone with duel citizenship. That alone makes life a whole lot simpler for them.

I once talked with a lady who told me her parents farm home was situated right on the border. Front door was on one side while back door on the other. They were treated as Canadians under the law, however a good portion of the farmland was in the US.

You must also remember I am speaking of 40 years ago when many of the rural side road crossings were not even staffed at night. This whole situation is probably quite different today. I'll bet that farm house has been torn down, and many of those side roads are gone.

In NB/Maine there is a sad situation of a farm where it is located in Canada but is cut off by a river. To leave you need to drive out her driveway and cross a few hundred feet of american soil to an unmaned croosing.

Since 9/11 they rotated new guards in and out and they chased the woman down after she returned with groceries and were very intimidating to her. Told she might be smuggling weapons in. (She's like 85)

They prevented her mail and newspaper from being delivered. They stoped the plumber and searched his whole truck (huge bill for her).

Kinda rough. Her farm ain't worth hardly a thing now due to the new restrictions.

Ken: That Maine - NB area is where the old guy was from that told me the story on the duel citizenship.

I find Customs Officers both US and Canadian don't really excell in the common sence dept. With the electronic surveilence equipment available to both governments today they know who and what is crossing that border 24-7 without leaving the monitor. All they need do is send POLICE after the crooks. Certainly no need to have that gaggle of unemployable people at the border annoying everyone.
