Sounds like you could have put the disc in backwards. On most things the side of the disc that has the springs on it,and the plate that holds the springs in the disc, goes into the pressure plate,or the part of the disc that has the long portion of the hub that the splines fit in goes towards the transmission.Either the hub wont allow the plate to go in place right,or on clutches with springs in the disc, they wont fit into the flywheel and it holds the plate away from the flywheel. Also the plate is usually marked with a sticker that says flywheel side or pressure plate side,a few times Ive seen them be wrong. If you split the tractor again, thats what I would look atif the plate that holds the springs is facing you,or the hub that the splines go in is kind of tapered then chances are its in right and the problem is something else.

1) Wrong clutch disk or installed backwards
2) Wrong/damaged pressure plate
3) Damaged splines on input shaft
4) Wrong/damaged/worn pilot bushing
5) Release fork damaged/misaligned
6) Improper linkage/free play adjustment
