I was given a Farmall M by my father-in-law . I don't have it down here yet , as he still uses it in the winter for snow removal . He said when he is too old to climb up on it then I can bring it home . It is in Iowa , and I live in Illinois , so my acess to it is limited to our trips up to see them . In any case , I plan on refurbishing it when I bring it home . It may need a couple of parts replaced , such as the grill , that I'm sure of . How do I find out what year the tractor was made ? My father-in-law is 75 years old , and doesn't remember what year it was when he bought it . As far as I know , the only distinguising feature it has , is the place where the old hand crank for the starter used to be . My father-in-law said that was an arm-breaker , so he removed it and switched it over to an electric starter . They also did some rigging to add a dual hydrolic control and pump to it . other than the paint being faded and being in need of a good bath , there isn't really much body work that needs to be done . My other question is ; what is the average cost of a complete restoration ? I'm what some of you would call a " city boy " , and this will be my very first tractor . Any help answering these questions would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks !

restoration costs? depends on what you need or want. do you want it to work? then i would do only what it needs to work. do you want a show tractor. how nice do you want it? the tractor will have a tag on the clutch housing , that can tell you the year. post it, and someone can tell you. you can buy a book or two to help you learn more about what you have.[letter series tractors by guy fay]. get the parts, owners, and service manuals. a must if you want to do any work on it, or find out what your tractor may be missing. being a "city boy", doesnt matter. be carefull though,,,,, tractors are addicting. hope this helps, pg
