I want to put up a worksop / shed / barn on my property with a concrete floor. What is the absolute cheapest way to build the walls and roof? I am looking at about 20 x 50

I have looked at pre-fab steel but seems way to expensive. I thought about trying to buy some old telephone poles, use them as the main vertical posts and make the rest out of 2 x 4's and plywood / wood siding.

WHat are the experiences of people on this forum? Yes, I know I need to get the foundation done properly and to code. But I want to handle the rest of it myself. Thoughts?

Thanks

hello-- the cheapest and most econ. building to build from my exp. as a art. draftsman- and user is an Aframe, build conventionally or with telephone poles. I have drawn plans for build's of 24 X 40 that were put up with own labor for alittle over 2K sometimes cheaper if you have poles or lumber available free. Its quick and not much up keep after wards. I build about one a year attached to a barn. So far, here, we dont have to worry about any inspection or codes as long as it is built or subbbed out by the farm owner (except electric, if setting a new service). Got 20 and only had damage to one, it is a 3 sided shed, open to the east, 14.5' on the low side and 17' on the high side, 30' open span. Had 110 mile an hour straight line winds out of the east and I lost part of the roof and sheeting. Insurance was good, no problems with how it was built. Rafters (2x8's) held, stringer boards pulled out as the tin was screwed in and the stringers nailed with coated 10's.

Shop we built in 1987. Put 14'x10" cedar poles 3' in the ground on 12' centers. Used 2 2x10's x 26' fir on each one (one on each side). Bolted a 2x6 plate on the side of the barn and set the other end of the rafters on it. Put 2x4 stringers 3' apart accross them. And also around the outside of the posts. Used tin on the outside, new tin on the roof. Lumber then cost me 40 cents a board foot for oak. Lined the inside with chip board. Surface mounted my electric and ran a feed off the barn. Poured the floor in one pour. It isnt pretty but it is functional, cost less than $2000 back then.

On what I built this summer. Similar designs only did not use the long rafters, Put posts in 14' out and again at 28' so I could use 16' oak for the rafters. New metal (buy getting assorted colors and lengths my siding was $25 a square). 55 gallon barrel of black acrylic fence paint makes it all nice and uniform. Including ALL hired labor (but no floor) I spent right at $3000 each on 2-28x72x 15' lowside 18' high side sheds.

I am just finishing up my garage which is 24wide/30long. I did a mono pour, i hired it out about 2,000.00 for that. Did one course of blocks for about 180.00 me and my cousin did this. I did the rest which includes shingles, vinyl siding,16'7 overhead door, service door, two windows 2/4 stud walls, and 4/12 pitch roof. I have between 6,000.00 and 6,500.00 hundred into everything for garage. Doing everything yourself will make it way cheaper worth it in the long run when you are not rich. I live in michigan.

You can buy an arch metal building cheaper than you can gather all the clumber, poles and tin .and the walls are tall enough you can park a tractor right close to the wall,AND EASIER TO EXPAND IF YOU NEED MORE ROOM.

I agree with the Cowman....used poles, used lumber, used tin. I've always tried to put new tin on roof; but boxing a shed with used tin works pretty good.....paint it with airless paint gun/aluminum paint; looks good/can do a big building in a couple of hours

I've built several buildings with poles or switch ties and used lumber and used tin. I don't think there are two alike but they shed weather. Some have the rafters running crossways with just the tin directly on, others have traditional rafters and either inch or two bys the other way. Just depends what material you have available. I am going to put another lean-to on the shop this month as soon as i can find some 12 foot 2 bys. For this I am planning to use 2x12s 20 fot long for rafters and then run 2x6s or 2x8s about 4-6 feet apart. I have another shed that has steel purlins and we put them 8 feet apart. You can't walk on the roof without useing a plank but what do i want to go up there for? It don't leak. Right now I have a dozen tractors housed and two pickups. And I don't have $200 of my own money in the whole works. OK, so I cheat, My landlord bought the new tin for the one building. It is the only one that we built with new material, 24 X 40 for less than $1500.

the tin for the roof of a 24'X40' building was around $1500?, or did i misread.
I am just wondering because I am about to begin a project of tearing down and rebuilding our "machine shed" which is about 24'X40' and i figured the only new material i'd need is tin for the roof...so I was wondering what to expect in terms of price.
thanks

just recalling from memory. I hauled home tin for another mans horse barn at the same time so i could be confused. Figure your square footage and do some calling around. You should be able to get sheets cut to length and save wase. Most bigger outfits get the steel on a roll and run it throug a forming die & cut to length. Sometime they can get rejected rolls or 2nds and save you $. You might not get a good chioce of color.

It's been a couple of years, but the last tin I bought (from local CO-OP) was about $1.10 per running foot..... .5 vee, 3 feet wide, 29 gauge, galvanized..... about $37.00 per square???? if I figured right??? 6% dividend at end of year....actual cost $1.03 per running foot.....

A friend of mine constructed his home with pallets! Yes, pallets! He collected lots of pallets, all the same size. Then, he set them up side by side, with 2x4's across the top edges, then he set up another wall on top of them, with another 2x4 on top! On the bottoms of the walls, they were set on a concrete footer. Then he constructed the roof in the traditional way. Next, he installed some kind of outer siding, filled the voids in the walls with insulation, installed windows and doors, and installed a floor! He says he built it 20 years ago, and it is still warm and cozy inside in the winter! How much is it worth, you ask? The County just assessed it at $34,000, for real estate purposes! by: Rusty Jones

I built a Cleary 30' x 54' pole building, 12' walls, 12'x12' door, 3' man door, windows, ridge vent, light panels, etc. for $11,000, material & labor. I did the electric myself.

I did the electric myself too, but I paid a crew a few thousand to frame it in one day and I paid a concrete expert to dig and pour the footings and another guy to do the flatwork.

Since you are going with foundation and concrete floor I would do this as a monolithic pour and stick build the building with 2x4 stud walls. The wood siding is going to require framing to hold it so you may as well use it for the structural frame. I would suggest that you consider 24' as a width as the typical 24'yard truss may be cheaper than a custom 20' truss. Check with your building supplier on truss cost. Above the trusses it is a toss up for metal vs. asphalt roofing but my preference for a shop would be an asphalt shingle roof as it is easier insulated and generates less consensation for a shop.

My shop is built exactly as Pete's Dream 20'wX40'L WITH 10" SIDEWALLS AND A 10"w X 8'h Roll Up Door in each end,TWO 36" slider window on each side and one Service Door,100 AMP. Electric and Wall and Ceiling Insulated. It serves me well.20' width was a Lot Restrication. 24' would have been ideal.

There are dozens of possibilities but I would build it in a fashion that will allow you to do most of the work yourself. In my area the material cost are going to be close to the same for the most part unless you can get some for a discount or better yet free. Your biggest expense will be in labor, so as you said do it yourself. Just keep in mind codes and also consider what you will do in it.

Problem is... I am already married. Wife would probably not think it is a good idea. I will run it by her though. I will need to find a middle aged farmers daughter as I think at 35 it maybe hard to attract the 19-23 year old farmers daughter... but then again, hmmm...

:-)
