Even though we think we have enough removed, it still comes down when we have gas in the tank and stops up the filters in no time at all.

Have seen here before where some of you have coated the inside of your tank with something that coats the rust and doesn't let it out into the gas or filters.

Could you please tell me what the epoxy or whatever it is you use to trap the rust and where I might get it. I have a 46 Farmall A that I love dearly but the filters are clogged in minutes any time I try to run it.

Thank you all in advance.

Tom

Take a long handle magnet with a flexible shaft and drag it across the bottom of the tank. The rust is nothing more than oxidized iron and will be attracted to the magnet. That will get quite a bit of it out of the tank.

Along with all the good ideas here- also unscrew the sediment bowl fitting, find a plastic hose that fits inside the fitting, cut it off so it sticks up into the tank about one inch when reinstalled. Won't pick up the little crud scooting along the bottom of the tank.

Search this site as this has been discussed before a lot. I have used a product called Kreem Seal from a motorcycle shop. I comes in a 3 part kit, a strong cleaner,a neutralizer, and the sealer. I dumped about a coffee can full of rust out of a motorcycle tank before using this stuff and its still okay 10 years later.HTH

There is an alternative to using crushed stone for getting rust out of your gas tank. I've heard of using BB's instead. I've never tried it but I've heard it works. Bill

Bob is right, I have used the crush stone to remove rust for years. I have an H farmall that I cleaned the tank eight years ago with crush stone and haven't had any more problems with rust. I do use an inline fuel filter and haven't changed it in two or three years. best place that I've found for crush stone is the hiway dept.

Most any radiator shop wll do this for you. It requires a special cleaner and then the coating is applied. It's an excellent repair.

If you want to do it yourself some NAPA stores sell a kit. Either way, the tank has to come out.

One way to get the crud out (if there are not a bunch of baffles in the tank) is to put a bunch of coarse stones (crushed rock), or a couple of handfulls of bolts, nuts, and sharp screws in the tank and shake it around. I have even heard of people securely strapping a tank to the hub area of a rear tractor wheel and then using the tractor, "tumbling" the objects around inside the tank.

Of course, if the "crud" is not too bad in the tank, perhaps just the chemical cleaner in the tank coating kit will do the job.

A nearby motorcycle shop may have the gas tank clean and coat kit, or try JC Whitney ot the Eastwood Co..

I'm just in an ornery mood, and just want to play with therealron!!!
First, the truth, Throw some bolts in your tank and shake well, or mount to another tractors hub and drive around... Knock the rust out and coat.
Your tank is some 58 years old and it's got rust, there is no new fangled anti rust coating inside of your rusty tank....
The realron: I just towed my utility trailer to the market with a 1964 Caddy... For the life of me, I couldn't find the barcode the police use to tell me the towing capacity... Think I'll be in trouble?!?!?
Laugh Ron, this is supposed to be fun!

Don't do it! Gas tanks are coated inside with "terne metal". It's lead and tin, I think, and is very soft. The reason his tank keeps rusting is because someone has no doubt done what you suggest.

Let's see now, Ron, his tank is ALREADY rusty, so the "tin" coating is ALREADY gone, so we need to remove the rust and crud before coating the inside to stop new rust from forming.

What do you find wrong with this plan?

Try real hard to actually read my post before you respond.

Knowing his tank has been damaged, I suggested he use one of the tank sealers made for this purpose or have a radiator shop do it.

In my response to your post, I was trying to keep someone ELSE who does not know any better from damaging HIS tank by doing something as foolish as what you suggested.

Real Ron
Once again thanks for my daily dose of comedy. I don't know where one person could come up with so much ignorance so now I am now convinced you have to be pulling a stupid joke on everybody. Understanding that now makes great reading for your comments.

We see "The Real Ron" when he responds to posts with personal insults in lieu of reasoned debate. "The Real Ron" = "sometimes wrong but never in doubt". A minimum level of civility would encourage people to take him seriously.

Pete; Your "A" has baffles in the tank in order for it to work uneven ground...my Cub had the same problem, take the tank off (not a big job) and cleanse thoroughly, or take it to a radiator shop as suggested, then apply that motorcycle stuff, it works reaaal well ! Then go to your dealer and get some anti-rust additive for your gas, at least for the firsr tankful or two, also add a NEW filter on your gas line and check it after every use...and it should clear up and run like a jewel Lots of luck, Jim
