Often wondered about this. When I was a kid, one of the crops was referred to as Rape or Rape Seed. Some years back they changed it to Canola, at least in Canada they did. Is it still called Rape elsewhere or did it change all over? Any other names for it in different parts of the world?

I read something about this awhile ago. I think Rape seed is still the official name, but it is marketed as canola oil to get away from the negative connotations of the word "rape".
Canola came from Canadian oil something or other.
It's been some time since I read the article, but that's the way I remember it.

Canola is the name applied to a group of plant breeding lines within the rape seed family which produce oil with less than 2% erucic acid. By reducing the erucic acid level the canola oil is sae for human consumption while the rape oil is only useful as a lubricant or in plastics. A by product of this plant breeding was that canola oil meal is low in glucosinolate which enables the meal to be used for livestock feed (whereas rape meal is unpalatible). All Canola is a rape seed but not all rape seed is Canola.

Was reading the other day, an article about something in the British Isles, and they used the term Rape Seed, so I guess that's at least one place. Don't remember which area of the Islands was being discussed.
