I just wanted to get my two cents in and I figured the thread was so long now that no one would see it. most of you were griping about goverment interference and I would be the first to agree that it goes way to far. Don't forget the good that comes of it also. Anybody remember the pictures of Chernobyl with the guy's mopping up reactor water with dust masks on their faces? Don't you think for one minute that that would'nt happen here if it wasn't for OSHA and other regulatory agencies. I'm sure that some of you have worked in shops and a piece of equipment was jury rigged or a safety feature was disabled because it would affect the bottom line if the money was spent for a proper fix. When I was a kid in the late '50's there were almost no bird or prey no turkey and very few deer. Gov't regulation and stocking programs brought them back. There was a small town about ten miles from my childhood home that had it's dump on the flats, on a river bank once or twice a year it would either be lit or just caught fire. The whole valley would fill up with acrid black smoke. Goverment regulation stopped that. Remember the Cuyahoga river in Ohio that actually caught on fire? Industry did not clean it the government did. Industry is always gonna do things as cheaply as possible and with out the big bad intrusive government the robber barons will kill as many as they think they can get away with. Ther exploding Pintos, Ford did a study and decided it was cheaper to settle with the victims than it was to engineer a fix. Thats my rant!

What is interesting about the whole thing is that nobody really trusts the government. Yet we turn around and look up to them to fix these obvious problems like you mention with no question to the impact of their decisions. The government has not made neuclear power safer, they have made it impossible. All the while people complain about dirty fossil fuel power plants.
And should govt be responsible for restocking the deer and turkey because the people have no control over themselves and how much they hunt?
I dont know the history of the river in ohio you mention but I would be willing to bet that the solution for fixing the problem was driving the industry out of town. At least that is how it is usually done.
And as far as exploding Pintos, Ford settled with the victims. What else do we need? In your mentality I suppose it would be best if we let the govt go in and liquidate Ford and disburse the proceeds to all Pinto owners?
All I suggest is that we should be as concerned with the govt"s fix to the problems as we are the problems themselves.

The Government is supposed to be by the people for the people. What about places where people can not have a fireplace or a wood burning stove. The Government did that. What about the high price of lumber while good timber burns every year because people who own that land can not harvest and manage good timber land in a manner that is both profitable and good for the enviroment. The government did that. Or to be more correct power hungry beuracrats sitting behind desks did that. I am not saying all government employs are bad but we have too many and too many regulations because we are allowing a few feel good people force their ideas and regulations on us many of them without any merit. I understand you can only see the bottom of the Grand Canyon by Mule train. What about our senior citizens who have worked and saved to enjoy their later years only to be "locked out" of places like this because they can not ride a mule?

I'm glad that everyone on that last string of posts didn't post their feelings in a new post. Don't worry about anyone not reading your post, it's no big deal whether they do or don't. Your point is correct though. My neighbour just came back from a fishing trip to the west coast. Ten years ago salmon fishing was pretty scarce but now he is getting back to where he was years back in the 70's.

I lived in the Northwest in the seventies. Salmon fishing was good. Because of some decisions made by Juudges "The Goverment" salmon fishing went down hill fast. In all honesty I feel the sportsmen of that area deserve the greatest majority of credit for the restoration of salmon fishing.
