... your are using? Just because the tractor is "rated" at 32 PTO horsepower, for example, doesn't mean that's what you are using! If there are some Ag Engineers out there, they might be able to tell us what power is required to cut certain types of grasses per foot of cutter. I imagine that if you stall the engine at rated PTO speed, you know that you were trying to cut more that the rated power.

I've got a 6 foot Kodiak medium duty with a 90 horse gearbox on the back of my B 414: 36 or so PTO horsepower.

2nd gear for the heavy stuff, 3rd for everything else. I've tried 5th, but it just bumps me too hard. I'm not in that big of a hurry anyway.

I have been in some stuff that was really thick and really tall, over the tractor stuff which required 1st gear, but once I got the area open, I went right back to 2nd.

Hope this helps.

I run a 6' light duty on 27 PTO hp. As long as I keep the pasture mowed fairly regularly, I can run about as fast as I care to go. If I let it grow up too much, I have to slow down considerably.

I pull an old FMC "Sidewinder" (6") with my "45 JD A (this one has a "power block") and don"t have any problems. I mow mostly weeds/grass, occasional brush, but usually belly high on the tractor when I mow.....

I"ve ran a 6"er on a 32 HP tractor, and on a 70 HP tractor. Depends on what you"re mowing, and how fast you need/want to go. The 32 HP tractor was cutting weeds well over the hood, and kept right on plugging along....@ about 2 MPH. The 70 HP tractor was cutting small cedars, Sumacs, and weeds over the hood too....@ about 5 MPH. I"d figure about 7-1/2 HP per foot, minimum. John

gona need some more information.

Yo could turn a 6ft bushhog with about 3hp, but if you actually want to cut anything!

so, what are you going to be cutting? (grass?) How long?

And how much are you going to do - you can get away with overworking a tractor for an hour once a month, not 6 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Ben

I do a right smart job with a Ford 2000 diesel ("73). Probably wouldn"t get lower than that. A 3000D does a real nice job. A MF 35 should do a right smart job. Have a 5" on one and it doesn"t even quiver so with a 6" I ought to at least hear the governor kick in.

What"s up with these keyboards,no marks to abreviate feet or degrees ? I"m sure your Ford"s can run a bigger brush hog than 5" and 6" LOL

Just started a couple of weeks ago. Kim is chasing it down. Glad to see others are having the problem as I thought it was my keyboard at first.

Fords are tough, but that little MF 35 with it"s 5" stroke is a real tugger. Haven"t been able to get the rpm"s to drop, much less lug it. Just keeps tuggin.

Around 32 pto. 3000 around 40 and 4000 around 45. Lot depends on engine and year model. Started with 4 cyl ohv after the "n" series then in "65 went to 3. Then on the 4000 they upped the cubes from 172 to 200 something in the "70"s as I recall putting it at around 50.

I"m a stroke nut (now that I"m not into short stroke hot rod cars) and know that stroke is where you get your power in a tractor. The 3 cyl engines have a good dose of it and with large dia to boot, pull much harder than my 4 cyl Fords.
