We have the above car (non-turbo) for about 6 months. 71,000 miles. The Service Reminder light came on. Stays on for 2 minutes - goes off - just like the manual says. The Volvo garage says only they can turn the light off, and that it needs a new timing belt. If the belt breaks, it's bad news for the valves.

Comments?

Any web site which would help me with this car?

Does your car have the 4 cylinder or 5 cylinder engine?
The 4 cylinder is not an interference engine. If the belt breaks the valves will not hit the pistons. I do speak from experience--my 86 turbo Volvo did break the belt and the only problem was the broken belt.
The 5 cylinder--I don't know for sure; But I'd bet its non interference also. Remembr Volvo was very conservative before Ford bought them.

Putting a new belt on isn't hard. In fact the dealership will take about 1 hour and charge about $100. You can do it in about 2--the first time. Reseting the light should be explained in the shop manual. Although I will agree the manuals do not come up tp US standards.

There are two types of engines:

non-interference - timing belt breaks, engine stops.

interference - timing belt breaks, valves hit pistons, engine stops forever.

Search the 'Net looking for "Volvo owners" and see if you can find a discussion group or website that can tell you which one you have.
