I manage a small credit union. Last Friday a guy brought us his 2001 Ford F350 Powerstroke truck because he couldn't afford the payments anymore. So now I gotta sell it. I took it around to some local dealers. One of them took it for a drive with me riding shotgun. He said the same thing "it runs out really good". I suppose he knows what he means, because I sure don't. I'm still waiting to hear what he thinks it's worth to him.

How about it successfully runs out of the shed where it's been parked since 1972 on its 60% tires with some slight dry rot? Some tune-up may be required and there's an inconsequential weld on the block. It does jump out of third gear and the T/A is weak. There's a slight knock in the engine, the brakes need adjustment and a there's rumble you can barely hear in the transmission, but it's an easy restoration and it runs out great! Who'll give me $3000?

For some reason, which now escapes me, I always thought the phrase means it accelerates nicely and runs well as you're going out from wherever you start. Also, I lived for several years in a rural area that was about 25 miles from the only large town(s) in the county. Instead of saying they were "going to town", folks thereabouts would say they were "going out town".

Unless I know the speaker-I infer that the machine actually runs in some fashion or other (Smoke, knocks-who knows?) and may be capable of moving under its own power (in at least one direction?).

A few years ago, I was down in Virginia at a campground heavily populated with Bluegrass musicians. During the course of playing music with alla them good folks for a few days, I made a lot of new friends. One of them asked me "Do you play out back in New Hampshire?
I had no idea what she meant by playing "out". She finally explained to me that it meant playing at gigs for money and not just our own enjoyment. Never heard it put that way before.

Who knows? I think it's probably just a cliche. Doesn't make any sense to me either, but what are you going to do?

I believe it means that from cold start-up through full throttle that everything works as it should including hydraulics and trans. Of course the auctioneer "knows" this cause he's so familiar with the equipment he's selling. LOL
