Let me play devils advocate here for a moment.

While I do not know Farmall’s I assume this is a rivet on tag. I can see your point but what could he possibly gain other than maybe a few years newer model.
If you were to put this tag on a different size tractor that would be obvious. Right?
Now if he were not looking for both a gas and diesel tag I would think he has a tractor he is trying to make show room condition that is missing the tag.

What could he possible gain. Alot. You could take a junk M and a junk 400 or 450 and sell it as one of the most collectable IH tractors. Yes it could be easily told apart from a real SMTA by someone who knows what to look for, but it could easlily be sold as a SMTA to someone who does not.

Shoot I see the question every once in a while about some HTA"s that have been seen around the country. There are a lot of people who don"t know that there ain"t no such animal.

I consider buying a serial # tag like buying someones social security card (well not quite but you know what I mean)

Just not right to put a different tag on a machine. It will foul up the new owner every time he goes for parts. The serial number is the id of so many part changes. It describes the different options the machine has.

Even if this is not a theft deal, it is just plain totally wrong to swap tags. Will cause problems to a new owner.

Can"t think of a good reason to want a serial tag.

Yes, if you're a thief.

Yes, if you're a thief. Otherwise they probably should have explained themselves.
