I have a 1950 8N that has a small "lift lever" just below the right of the seat. It's a shaft about a 1/4" in diameter that moves up and down vertically about 3". It extends out of the right front mounting bolt of the top Ferguson cover. Can anyone tell me what this lever controls? Thanks in advance.

That connects to a control valve to switch your hydraulics. See the link which also links to a picture.

Somebody has obviously installed a supercharger from an Essex Tri-Directional tractor on your N Ford. Most of them fell off during field tests but yours has withstood the test of time. That is a rare piece of equipment and must be treated with care if it is to work properly.

That is your draft control lever. It switches the hydraulic lift system from;
Draft Control down, or horizontal Draft control is primarily used for ground engaging implements such as a moldboard plow.
Position Control up, or vertical Position Control is used to maintain a desired position above ground (useful for mowers, etc.).

This link (on the 9N, 2N, 8N Ford board) has everything and more than you ever wanted to know about the lift system on the N's...

Thanks Steve, but I'm not talking about the draft control, I know what that is. What I'm refering to is a small 1/4" round shaft with a knob, like a knob on a pull switch on the top end of the shaft. The shaft moves up and down about 3". It's just under your right thigh and butt cheek as your sitting on the tractor. I've never seen one on an 8N before. Markm

Hmmm. Interesting.
Never heard of such a critter. Can you post a picture of it? Or you can email me, if you'd prefer...

Sorry I wasn't any help, though...

"DO NOT TOUCH THAT LEVER" unless you're wearing a parachute.

To: The Old Ford Mechanic. LOL. I guess you tie it to your pants and if you get thrown from the tractor, it ejects you and the seat 200' up in the air and you parachute back to Earth!! Dunt no!

To: Steve. Remote hydralics. Hmm, when I put the lever down and let out the clutch, I notice it weeped a little Hydraulic fuild around the top bolt on the right side of the case just above the Hydraulic dip stick. After removing, I discovered that it wasn't a bolt head, but it was a cap that looked like a bolt. The bolt stud was hollow. When the cap is off and you let the clutch out, the hollow stud squirts "H" fluid 20'. I think your right Steve. Thanks so much. MarkM

To: Paul. My face is red. I meant for the above message to go to you, but wrote Steve. Getting old I guess! Thanks again. MarkM
