Does the hour meter on an engine run at different speeds in relation to engine RPM.

That probably depends on the engine, but generally not. (I'm not aware of any that do.)Ford's had a mechanical tach and proof meter, which usually recorded an hour around 1600 rpm, so running them faster would record over an hour for every hour worked, and slower, would record less. Probably balances out in the end. The newer electronic models record clock time. Engine speed doesn't matter. HTH.

The older HOBBS hour meters recorded time the engine was running. They were connected thru a pressure switch to an oil line or gallery on the engine. When the engine was started, the oil pressure closed the electrical circuit and activated the meter. When the engine was shut down, the oil pressure dropped and opened the circuit, shutting off the meter. These will work on any engine with pressure lube system. I installed many of these on Euclid earthmoving equipment. Joe

IH's, Oliver's, Minny's, and Deere's were also driven off the distributor or injection pump so an hour of idling at low RPM resulted in less than an hour on the hour meter. Typically I've heard an hour was 100,000 crankshaft revolutions, or 60 minutes of running 1666-2/3 RPM.
