Quad 9's were the answer before CAT came out with the bigger dozers. CAT also produced side by side 9's for production dozing. Quad 9's as shown had an operating weight of 178800 lbs, and 820 hp. For comparison, a D11R weighs in at 225,500 lbs and runs 850 hp.

When I was a young fella, my father worked in open pit coal mines. I remember one time he took us out to see the biggest dozer ever. It was two D-9s hooked side by side with a single blade across them. Don't remember how wide that blade was, but it was huge. One operator ran the combo from one seat. This was also the company that had the walking dragline in Ohio, one of the largest ever made. It was quite a site!

How do you steer it? Differential in the back one? Right front and left rear together? Back one just fights its way along?

We got there late and wanted to watch the pulls so didn't get much time. And, I just plain screwed up. Sorry fellas.

Where was this. Do you know any of the mechanics or electronics of connecting the two? Seen a Allis-Chalmers dozer with two engines in it many years ago. Proto type I think. Nice pictures.

This was at the Brooks Oregon SteamUp. If you look close you can see wires or hoses in the next picture connecting the two. Pretty different to be looking at Farmall, Fords, AC's and the like all morning then this thing rumbles into view!

So, were they able to make a "full pull"?

Thanks for posting that.

What would you possibly stop him with? That beast would probably rip the bowl right out from under a 631! Looks like he needs a ripper on the back one. Might need the extra weight for traction!

In the second picture you will see the cables that go back to steer the 2nd rig. One operator-sits on the front rig-back rig turns opposite of the front rig. The only use I know of for them is to push load rubber tired scrapers. I have loaded many a scraper load in front of one-they will flat do the job. A good friend of mine ran the push cat. Not sure if the control cables are electric or hydraulic or both.
