I hesitate to post this but... I feel so sorry for that little boy that was in the accident. About 30 miles from where I'm sitting right now, we've had 7 people killed this summer, each and every one was a truck slamming into cars stopped for road contruction....trucks cruising down the highway...cruise control on and the driver (apparently) asleep at the wheel. These are 3 seperate accidents I'm talking about. I don't know if any of you all know this, but the hours of service regulations for truck drivers was changed earlier this year. I think I'm right about all this, but I may be somewhat wrong...so take it as such It used to be that you could legally drive 10 hours in a 24 hour period....now its something like you can drive 14 hours and then you have to have so much time off....i'm not sure about the actual times...but what I'm getting to is this, If things like this are happening more and more, then something is sure as HECK wrong and we all need to get this straightened out. My heart just goes out to every family thats had a horrible tradegdy this summer. What makes me wonder if this change in laws has had some effect on all this. I'm just throwing this out guys, something I think we should all think about. I can only imagine what a driver feels like after something like this....is horrible for all concerned. One of the reason I'm saying this is that a buddy of mine who drives a truck told me it wasn't gonna work. I'm praying for the boy, and for all in the same boat

I see a lot of very agressive woman drivers in the Minneapolis area with their phones stuck to their ears. Very irritating to say the least.

Not sure which state you're in but I'm in IL. Have your State Dept. of Transp. folks talk with IL DOT. I'm a DOT employee and we've dealt with this issue ourselves in recent years. All it takes is more traffic control efforts on the construction crews part but it has to be required and specified by the DOT. More signing, message boards, rumble strips, news releases, reduced speed limits outside and inside construction zones, state trooper presence in medians..... . It all works. Cost State $$$$ but saves lots of lives. Good Luck!

I drove a truck cross-country for ten years. I could see I had to get out of it or someone was going to die. I just never could get enough sleep. The companies can't stand for a truck to set still. Even when we could sleep, it wasn't quality sleep, because you froze in the winter and suffocated in the summer. (No idling those engines, that costs money.) It's never going to get any safer for the public or more rewarding for the drivers until they start paying drivers by the hour and quit treating them like third-world slaves. Thanks to all the drivers. I wouldn't have clothes to wear or food to eat if not for you, but I'm sorry I wasted so much of my life driving.

Larry you have several of your facts wrong. Under the old hrs of service you could drive 10 hrs and work another 5 hrs, total off 15hrs. then you must take a 8hr off duty break. Under the new hrs of service you can drive 11 hrs but only work a total of 14 hrs then take a 10 hr. break. There are a lot more to both hrs of service, but these are the basics. You can work 6o hrs it 7 days or 70 hrs in 8 days then you must take a 34hr break. It is harder to run ileagle under the new hrs than the old. How ever the Fed appeals Court has scrapped the new hrs due to a law suit by Walmart and other large corps. We still operate under them until some thing is done. AAA has done studyies and 75% of the time when a car big truck fatale accedent happens the car is at fault.

I travel quite a bit due to my work. I have driven Volkswagons as well as Freightliners. From my observations, most truckers are careful drivers, they may drive fast, but they do have lots of experience. I have observed many more incidents caused by cars than trucks. Driving a large truck for a few miles should be mandatory in order to get a drivers license. It would make auto drivers aware of the vision issues truckers face. I feel a few bad truckers ruin the image of all.

I agree 100% with you guys, but in this case the guy driving the truck admitted he was running hard, over his time....and doing cocaine....and is out on bail..... somethings wrong with that picture.

Charlie;
While I would love to comment on the above post I feel this is not the time or the place to do that so I will do my best to leave out the WHY's and WHO IS.

I will comment or your post though.
He is out on bail because that is our system. We live by it good or bad because it is our system.

Also believe me when I say this will haunt this driver for the rest of his life. I know I have been in his shoes. While my accident was NOT my fault it still took 7 years of my life away mentally.

Now that I am starting to cry I must stop there.
We are praying for Dillon and please keep us posted on how he is doing.
