I know this is way off topic but I had to vent somewhere.. I am reading an article on Netscape about Tom Ridge saying he is going to have to retire from being the HOmeland Security Secretary and work in the private sector to ern enough money to put his teenager boys through college. I guess I can't blame him really because according to the article he only makes a measly $175,000 a year and before that as governor he made an even more measly $138,316 a year. But I guess when you bu your house for $784.800 money might get kinda tight there....

On the bright side it does say that he owns between $122,000 and $787,000 in stocks and bonds along with ownership in several large companies including Walt Disney,Nike,General Electric and others so at least maybe he won't go hungry....

Funny thing is I think if I could make $75,000 a year I could put my kids through school, I know people ho are doing it on ALOT less!

OK I have vented, I feel better now .:)

The most pathetic part of it is not the pay but the stupidity of appointing people solely on the basis of party poyalty and donations to the party. It happens at all levels of federal and state governments and it makes me want to vomit. If these people had any ethics/character at all, they wouldn't even consider accepting such a position, especially if they don't have any expertise in the area.

Oh, one more thing. Just because you're hearing about his kids' college expenses doesn't mean that's the real reason. In almost every case where a high-level government official is asked to step down or is fired, they never come out and say they're fired--they're always leaving "for personal reasons" or to spend more time with their family, etc.

Hey Jeff, as a retired government worker, I think I can add a little to this discussion. First, I think DL was correct when he surmised that there may be more to Tom Ridge leaving the job. According to this morning's news there were several issues, his kids' college being only one of them. Secondly, I don't believe that he is eligible for retirement. He is part of the Senior Executive Service but still has to work a minimum number of years and be of a certain age to qualify. Furthermore, I get the idea that he hasn't made any such decision anyway. I heard that he was protesting the coverage as such and it may be that the media has blown yet another item way out of proportion. For what it's worth, Glenn

Try sending one through college on less than $25k and they say we make too much for more assistance.
When we called financial aid at the college the person sounded like a broken record, "get a loan". So I guess with the shape our country's in their telling that to a lot of kids.

We are here to serve the gummit, not the way it started over 200 years ago but the way it is now.

For those of you who, because of your political affiliation or whatever other reason, might construe my comments above as an attack on President Bush, let me assure you that it is NOT.

As far as I know, Mr. Bush is not only satisfied with his salary, but is attempting to double his time on the job, after November...no "retirement" talk there. So I have no argument with Mr. Bush on this topic...so please don't ASSUME that I do.

Hey Buzz,
Thanks for the follow-up, but I didn't take your comments as an attack on the Prez. I think there are issues other than money driving Secretary Ridge's decision. Honestly, I don't know why ANYONE would even accept a job like that in the first place... odds are, it's a NO WIN situation. Imagine being the one guy responsible for the security of the entire US. We must be vigilant ALWAYS... the bad guys only have to get lucky ONCE... and when they do, guess who goes down in flames??? I know it seems like these guys make a lot of money, but I WOULDN'T WANT HIS JOB!!!
Regards, DL

Likewise on the Dem, Rep, Ind - my general feelings on all, not picking on any one side....

Here in Minnesota the Minneapolis school board keeps hiring out of state school superintendents. I guess it's a big sign of prestege to them that someone comes in from out of town to run the school - see we are such big shots! So they keep selecting one, and _then_ negociate a contract. It's become rediculous - they all leave after 2 years, because they negociate such a big severance pay, they can't afford to stay! On top of the rediculous salary they get to begin with.

And then the whole thing starts over again.

What a joke. The regular teachers & kids suffer, but some big-shot Super is supposed to be so important, must go through this every 2 years.

Indiana schools have become revolving doors for superintendents, also. I work in a rather large system that is generally acknowledged to be a pretty good one. We had an EXCELLENT long-term superintendent that retired in his mid-60s. He was followed by a guy who couldn't be content to let things run as they were and simply make improvements. This guy had to stir the pot and try to make a name for himself. When things didn't go his way, he decided he was "emotionally burned out" and took a big severance settlement. The school board went on a nationwide search, and hired a complete loser. This guy left less than two years later with a huge severance settlement, and left us in very bad financial shape. He wasn't the only reason we had financial troubles, but he was a big part of it! Finally, they moved the curriculum director into the job on an "interim" basis. She did the job with enough grace and determination that she now has the official title. Sometimes the best talent is already on staff.

Hey paul, It's not just in MN. More and more it is getting to be a revolving door for principals and superintendents. Everytime they want an 'expert' (I once heard it said that an expert was anyone more than 40 miles from home wearing a tie and carrying a briefcse).

Outside expert is sometimes hired to do a nasty job the locals know has to be done but they don't want to have to live with the fallout from the neighbors. Outsider does job and leaves, no big feuds for people who stay. RN.

Besides, If these morons from out of town can leave like a thief in the dark, (after they so boldly comitted larceny in broad day light), it saves the local establishments the cost of Tar and Feathers to bestow a fitting farewell.
