It is interesting how some people are confused when a common name is given for some mechanical component which may not be the correct technican name. For instance: Cotter Pin- Cotter Key, Keyway -Key seat, Cap screw- Bolt, nut-tap, Cartridge- Shell, Pistol- Revolver, USS- NF, Street Ell- Half elbow.Bearing Race- Bearing cup, welding rod- electrode, I could go on but I doubt if this is really a problem in most shops. In working behind a parts counter we have heard them all and we can usually get the fellow what he wants; That is smart communication.

I was once in a plumbing supply house, talk about things having more than one name!!! The counter man brought out a bag full of parts for a customer, the old plumber looked through the bag and said "What is this?"
The counter man said "It's what you said"
The plumber said"Don't give me what I said give me what I want."

Is it a chain binder or a boomer
A pickup is a small one and a truck is a bigger one and an SUV is NOT a truck.

For about a year and a half I had a buddy named Bob. "Hey Bob...". One day another buddy says "Gotta go help Greg do somethin, give me a hand". Sure, who's Greg I asked. Awe, you know Greg. I had no clue who Greg was. Buddy picks me up and we end up at Bob's. I ask if Bob's comin to help this guy Greg too. Buddy says he don't know Bob, but might be out back. We get out back and there's Bob who turns out to be Greg. I ask why he's been lettin me call him Bob for the past year and a half, and he says "I know who you were talkin to". My point is that as so long as you're on the same page as whomever, guess it don't matter much. Called my ex-wife the wrong name once...guess she wasn't on the same page with me on that one, not much anyway.

I always loved the cartoon that shows a lady standing in front of a parts counter and the parts man is saying "I don't care what your husband called it, I still need a part number."

I do think a lot of it is regional. Here's another: Is it a field cultivator or a quack digger?

Loren,

What's a quack digger?

Here that would mean you are talking about some wacko groupie who really likes phoney doctors.

A quack digger (here in so MN) is a slightly modified field cultivator. It is for digging out clumps of quack grass. It has large duckfoot shovels on it, & might be a close spacing on the shanks. does not handle trash, but it shears off roots in quack, Canadian thistle, etc. weed patches.

Well, here in Michigan a "quack digger," also called a "quack lifter," is a specially set up field cultivator. Shanks are spring loaded, and have narrow pointed shovels. The design and purpose is to drag the quack grass roots to the surface where the drying action of the sun kills them off. It may take several cultivatings over couple weeks to accomplish the task. Typically, these impliments were trailer type, as most were built before 3pt hitches became popular. They are not terribly popular today, as chemicals have largely taken over their job. Works well as a replacement for a "spring tooth drag," (harrow?). OOPS - Now I opened another can of worms!

Some of your examples don't hold water. For example, cap screws and bolts both exist and are different things. I agree that often people mistake one for the other.

Which reminds me of the time I went to the local hardware store for supplies when I was building a hot rod in high school. The proprietor's cute 16 year old daughter was behind the counter. Surprised me when I asked for bolts and she sweetly replied, "Cap screws or machine bolts?" I suavely acted like I knew the difference. I should have also suavely asked her out, but didn't.

Reminds me of the time I was in Vocational school back in the early 80's in a Auto mechanics class. I asked a girl who was in the class if she had a feeler guage I could use for a while. She gave me a dirty look, and almost got slapped until I had explained to her what it really was! We became good friends after that.

And my dad allways called a nut for a bolt a "burr"
But please, say sickle mower, not "cycle", and don't bale your hay with a "bailer"

Some here call a threaded nut a "Tap" Plus one guy refers to bolt size by the size wrench it takes. He calls a 1/2' bolt with a 3/4" hex head a "3/4 inch bolt" I never found the patience to try to explain otherwise to him... Regards. Davis

The "Burr" thing.

I always understood that a "burr" was refering to the old square headed 'machine bolt type' while a nut is the more common modern 6 sided type.

I think "cultivtors" is regional.

I'm a farmer's daughter in south/central MN. Someone asked me yesterday if I knew what a "quack digger" was. I said, "Goodness no." I asked my dad, and he said that it was a "feild cultivator." I'd never heard that before, so I think it's regional :)
