Ball or Ball Bearing?

In the 7/28 tip of the day Greg D. suggests: "Find a nut to fit the shaft and a ball bearing large enough to not go through the nut. Weld the ball to the nut and allow to slowly cool....." Greg uses the terms "ball" and "ball bearing" interchangeably throughout his tip. This was very confusing. A "ball bearing" has an outer ring, inner ring, several "balls", a ball separator (retainer) of some sort, and usually caps or seals. I hate to nit-pick, but there is a big difference and after 18 years of making "ball bearings" for Fafnir, it is a pet peeve, I guess. Y'all have a good day!

I had a ball bearing mouse trap, but he ran off with the neighbors Persian.

Who is confused? You make your puller however you want to, perhaps both ways, and I will make one using just the ball. I know I will get my wheel off with the one I use and you can try both and see which one works best. If you were able to find the time clock at quitting time you should not let this confuse or frustrate you too much.

The Missouri Boy has a point. Extricate a ball from a ball bearing- put it in the palm of your hand- approach 100 farm guys and ask them, "What is this?" I would bet 99% say "It's a ball bearing" (I'm not counting the smarta$$e$ who say, "It's a steelie- so who shoots first?"). Sometimes we get too hung up on semantics, especially if we're too close to the subject.

Careful now, a "steelie" is a good adjective and I used to use em. How about "Agate" shooters. My knuckles on my right hand (middle finger especially) are still disfigured from shooting dem (those)marbles.

Old memories. Grin

We called em "Agies"- and I liked them much better than steelies- never could shoot well with a steelie. My prize agie was one my dad bought me when we went to the beach when I was about 10. Didn't ever lose it at marbles, but its been misplaced somewhere during the last 40 or so years.

I can remember a trip to San Antonio, TX. and my mother was going to buy a souvenier for us. Asked me what I wanted and I said an agate shooter. Still remember going in the store (had counters built up like the Woolsworth 5 and dime; maybe it was). Anyway, remember picking out a pretty one with concentric rings in beige and reddish brown.

Course in those days, the "notches on your gun" was how big a bag of marbles you had.

Fun.

It is confusing when someone tells you to use a ball bearing when what they mean is use a steel ball. That is, if you know the difference. As for finding the time clock, I might have trouble there. I've been on salary for about 16 years.
