My father-in-law gave me a John Deere 1010.

I wanted to place a front-end loader on it, but it does not have powere steering.

Quetion: Is it possible to put power steering on it?

Is it worth doing so in order to place a front-end loader on it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You know Ken, your father-in-law gave you a 1010 and his daughter? Sounds like you're doing pretty well for yourself. But, if you want a loader for the 1010, you wouldn't be the first to do it. If go under pictures on this site and search for "1010", you'll see a few of them, one even has a backhoe as well. Guess what's really important is whether or not the 1010 with a loader will do the job for you. Aint Texas kind of flat? Was when I was stationed there. Turn with your brakes, I do and it aint flat at all. Don't know anything about a 1010, but a 81 yearold retired farmer by me made his own power steering for his AC D14, and it works well. Yep, you can add power steering on a 1010. As for "buying a real loader tractor...", maybe someone'll give you his 400HP air conditioned, articulated job, complete with pop machine, pool table, and auto-piloted GPS, but until then Ken, I'd say that you're way ahead of many.

Ken, you should keep the 1010, restore it to near original condition without adding ps or loader to it. You will always have a part of history, passed down to you by those your wife loves - - - hard to put a $ sign on the value of that. Enjoy your 1010.

Ken,
I have to agree with Tom. Keep it. My dad passed away about a year and a half ago. My son has the 1950 JD A dad bought new. I have the 1956 JD 60 my grandfather bought new. There is an old saying "You can buy anything for a price", but what price is sentimental value worth. They are not for sale. Loren

Thanks for all the comments; greatly appreciated. Ray, unfortunatley I'm far away - Texas.

I guess I'll hang on to the daughter and tractor he gave me, without modifications.

Have a great day,
Ken

I don't think it's cost effective to put power steering on a tractor like that one, which doesn't already have it. Also, contrary to the remarks made by someone who obviously belongs on the bashing board, not many diehard Deere fanatics want a 1010. It was a unpopular model to say the least. Personally, I doubt you could sell it for enough to buy a D19.

Sure you could! Nobody likes D-19's, either!

You know, that's the wonderful thing about it. There were less than 7000 made before the 190's made their appearance so very few people really know about them. They are actually equal to the D17's only with several more horses under the bonnet for even more pull. But, with the turbo on the D model you could crack the head if you didn't let them cool down a little before you shut them off. Of course there isn't hardly a machine out there that a fool can't tear up if he really puts his mind to it.

Ron has a point. You could sell that 1010 for a heck of a price to one of the JD fanatics. Take your cash and buy and AC D-19 and loader, put the other half in the bank, and pat yourself on the back every day for being so smart. Or you could buy an overpriced JD loader, put it on the little Johnny Popper you've already got, build up your arm muscles and use it as best you can. I suspect it will continue to be worth a whole lot more than it's working value because so many people have such an inflated idea of JD value. You are in a win-win situation, just depends on how you want to handle your equity.

If it were me, I'd sell it and buy a real loader tractor... live hydraulics with remotes, power steering, WFE, etc.
