There is a gentleman that posts about 8 or 9 photo ads a day on this site. Seems always to be the same equipment. Has anyone dealt with him in the past? Is there some kind of scam going on? Most of the equipment seems to "as found as is" condition but is priced fo above avg condition. Thinking of looking at some of it (6 hour drive for me) but don't want to waste his or my time.

Re: Barlow, KY in reply to WDS, 07-22-2004 12:38:29
I have just returned from buying a tractor from John Archie in Barlow, KY. My only previous contact with him was via email in response to a photo ad he placed on here. I was greeted cordially even though I arrived about two hours earlier than he expected, on a drizzly Sunday.

He started the tractor, which was "cold", and told me to do what I wanted with it while he finished loading some tires for another man. I told him I'd rather he demonstrate the mower and he said, "OK, just look it over then and let it run while I finish this other."

The tractor appeared just as it does in the (linked) photo ad. The mower I had not seen before, having asked for it during our email exchange. It looked a bit rough to me. John replied, "Yes it is, but it's a Woods and it will do the job you said you want to do."

After a little more discussion, I asked him if he had seen this message thread. Let's just say he showed a little annoyance. (The "he said, she said" kind of gossip that I've seen, rather than first-hand reports, is what irritates me). I told him I intended to post a message about my own experiences, whether I went home with a tractor or not. His response was, "Would you please? I don't misrepresent a tractor; you can't sell that way." (Expletives deleted)

I can't speak for anyone else, nor for anyone else's real or rumored dealings with John Archie. But here are the main points of my dealing with him:

1. I asked for a tractor ready to work and, in my opinion, that's what I got.

2. The photo ad for the tractor shows the worst rear rim and the worst front tire. The rear tires have tread that is nearly like new and the front tires are very good.

3. I originally asked John about the 8N he advertised, then told him what I needed to do and asked his recommendation between the two tractors. His recommendation matched that of a relative who has been farming and buying and selling equipment all his life.

4. The tractor is not a show-room tractor; that's not what I asked for and that's not how it was priced. Problems that do not show in the photo are a loose seat, one burned out headlight, and a loose key switch. None of these problems prevent the tractor from being used immediately for the jobs I described to John (mowing approximately 5 acres of already mowed land and reclaiming approximately 10 acres overgrown with brush).

5. I was completely prepared to return home with an empty trailer if the tractor was not in working order. I'm a stickler for keeping to a deal, but since John had assured me via email that it was ready to work, there would not have been a deal to break if the tractor had not been ready to work.

6. Now that I have the tractor, I intend to service it and clear up some of the cosmetic problems, just as I would expect to do to any used equipment for which I paid less than a "new" or "fully restored" price.

7. He had assured me the hydraulics and the engine were in good shape. The engine runs great and the lift operates smoothly with no leak-down. The faded paint he pointed out in the ad makes no difference at all to me.

In short, I now own that Long tractor, a 5 ft Woods 'bush-hog' and an ancient but very heavy and rugged-looking grader blade with a plate that says, "Manufactured by The Carrington Terracer Company". I had emailed John on the 23rd about a blade, he said he had two and I asked him to save one for me to move around some sand and gravel. I think he saved me the ugliest but toughest one he had. It looks like it would take a tank to damage it.

I enjoyed my visit with John and wish him well with his sweet-running pulling tractor. Maybe I won't ever see him again, but I'll think of him when I'm mowing. After I follow his warning advice about getting used to the tractor on level ground.

I intend to click that "Voluntary subscriber" link and buy a 3 year subscription in thanks to the people who run this excellent site. Not only do they provide a means of exchanging an incredible amount of information, but they provided a way for me to find a tractor, and dealer, that suits me.

This is John Archie here, I just wanted to let you guy's know that I do not miss represent a tractor. I tell anyone all about the tractor and what is wrong with it. I very seldom get a one owner tractor in. I try my best to please everyone, but all I know to do is be as honest as I can. I try to buy tractors that I know the back ground on, that way I can inform the buyer of as much as I know. If there is anything wrong with it, I tell them. I guess everyone to there own opinion.

I'm going to Barlow, KY on Sunday, the 25th to see John about a tractor. If that's who you're referring to, I'll let you know how it goes.

This will be about a 4 hour drive for me, which will shock friends, family and neighbors. They consider it an event when I travel the 6 miles to town. I point this out as an indication of my own estimation of the probability of the advertisement (and advertiser) not being a scam. Then again, I've been fooled before. It's just been a decade or so.

All queries about the tractor have been made via email. The advertisement for the tractor I asked about has not been reposted since I said I would buy it. Every question I've asked has been answered.

If the tractor is as advertised, it will be mine on Sunday and I'll try to get off of it long enough to post a follow-up here. If it is not, then I will have ventured out into civilization for nothing.

I have had good dealings with him, but good luck anyway. My opinion, he's a pretty honest man.

I have just returned from John's. Left at 7:30 am and got home about 4:30 pm, almost 400 miles round trip. I was fully prepared to return with an empty trailer and had prepared my friend, who provided truck, trailer and driving, for that possibility.

The Long tractor that John last advertised on 13 July, 2004 in the photo ads here is now parked beside my garage. I enjoyed my visit with John.

I always wandered if he ever sold any tractors. The same ones are listed over and over with an additional one every once and a while. The prices don't seem to ever change.

Sounds like the same guy that keeps listing a Farmall 200 with "wrong decals on hood". I believe it actually has right decals, but wrong(C or S/C) hood. I e-mailed him about a tractor. Never got a response.

I agree --- I am a little interested in the D17 but hate to buy something from someone 6-8 hours away and when I show up it's junk.

Thanks for the feedback

PS: What are the rules about businesses posting in the ads.

They are paid ads so its probably if you pay you play. There needs to be a rating system like Ebay.

Tlak, just FYI - the Photo Ads are NOT paid ads. No one has ever paid us to run one, nor have we ever received a commission. There have been more than 50,000 photo ads run on this site, boy would I be rich if they each even paid one dollar!! I'm not hinting, so don't everyone start sending me money ;)

I just didn't want anyone to think that you can "pay to play" here, as you insinuated.

Thanks for listening,
Kim

Somebody a long time ago said dealers paid for their ads.I thought it had come from you but if not excuse me. Seems like alot of people complain about certain types of ads or certain people posting them, seems like there would be some way to control this.

No, I just think you are cutting the guy pretty short, because I know from dealing with him, that he is a pretty honest guy. If you pay attention to all the follow ups, there was only one man that went and didn't buy from him. All the others are just opinions.
