I have been shopping for a heavy duty flatbed gooseneck trailer for a few months now, I have done quite a bit of research by visiting web sites of the various manufacturers, and I am reasonably sure that I know what I want as far as total deck length, weight capacity, etc. The problem I am having is that when I personally visit a dealer for the trailers I am interested in, I find out very quickly that I know quite a bit more about the product he is selling than he does. This is becoming very frustrating. Has anyone else encountered the same problem, or is it just me?

I am a dealer for H&H trailers. The reason I became a dealer is I got tired of some of the same things you are talking about. Tell me what you're looking for and I'll give you the strait stuff!

Rusty, have you tried H&H down the road in Clarinda? I work down at their custom shop on the bypass.(where the old JD dealer used to be)While I don't deal much with the Hi-Deck line, I could get you in touch with the right person. Call them at 712-542-2156, ask for Sandy,(my wife) and tell her I told you to call. She'll be happy to help you get the info you need.

I had the same experience , looking at trailers. Every dealer had "Exactly what you need" LOL... I finally called Stoll Trailers in Abbeville , SC. Manager & I discussed what I wanted, & he gave me a price. I went down the next week to go over everything & leave a deposit to get started. I was very pleased with the results. He added 6 inches to the neck height for my tall Dodge (no extra charge) Tires were Goodyear 10 ply. I can highly recommend Stoll Trailers.

I like my Ridgeline trailer. It's built in Tennesee somewhere.....Don't have the towns name at the time. I bought it from D&J Equipment, in Mt. Washington Ky. Good trailer at a good price.
(24'+5', 14,000lb GVW, fold down ramps, fold up dovetail, all the other bells and whistles---$3750)
I bought the trailer there for two reasons. One was price. The other was the owners knowledge of product. He uses what he sells. He was able to (accurately) answer my questions about legalities of pulling trailers on the highway. Most places I went to didn't know what I already did, and I DON'T sell trailers for a living.
A couple places told me what they thought I wanted to hear. If they didn't know the obvious, how could I trust them on the not-so-obvious?
Keep shopping. You'll find someone, sooner or later, that knows their product, and will shoot you a good price. John

Hey Rusty; this doesn't answer your question, but..... ....have you considered building your own; is that within your capabilities; do you have the time and place????? You'll have a better (maybe) trailer for less money.

I have thought about building it myself, problem is, I don't know where to get the steel, I don't have the equipment for cutting that steel(except for a torch, which is not precise enough) and I don't trust my welding skills, if the trailer breaks while on the highway, I want it to be someone elses liability, not mine.

I think you are making a wise choice to buy over build. I've never been able to spec one any less than I could buy one and, as you say, you never know when a weld will break.

I find that the majority of sales people any more don't know very much about what they are selling. I have to admit it's pretty easy for me to learn a lot of details about the 2004 Chevy model XYZ, via the internet, if that's what I'm interested in. The guy at the dealership needs to know not only about the 2004 Chevy XYZ, but all the other Chevy's, the Pontiac's, the Caddies, the Buick's, the Toy...'s, the Whozitsu's and maybe several others, so it's difficult. Difficult, but not impossible. Smart people know how to be successful at what they do. So make a mental note of it when you run into someone who seems to know their stuff. You'll want to look for them when you are back where they work and need some help. Heck even Wal-Mart accidently hires a fisherman and hunter for their sporting goods department once in a while.

Have you seen any with the axles that use no springs ? I think they call them rubber torsional axles. They cost more but should be worth it,no springs and shackles to go bad and a lower height.

Yup. When I bought my new pick-up it was really frustrating to realize I knew their product better then they did. But they could tell you all about the corvette.
I recently bought a trailer from Cox Trailer sales in Upper Marlboro(?), Md. He really knew his trailers. Sells a lot of trailers too. I bought a PJ trailer and have been pleased with both the trailer and the dealer.
PJ does have a web site; PJ-Trailer.com

Can you tell me more about the PJ? Did you get a straight deck or a beavertail? What type of ramps? There is a dealer not too far from me, thinking about paying a visit.

The PJ trailers are the same as Load-Trail trailers. They are built next door to each other in Tigertown Texas outside of Paris Texas. I have a Load-Trail and I have been quite happy with it.

Actually I bought 2 trailers; one a Gooseneck brand 1982 vintage and the other a PJ.
The PJ is a 14 foot box dump "gooseneck" trailer. 16.000 GVW, 16" X 8 lug wheels with electric brakes. 3 way tailgate, 2 foot steel sides which I raised to 3.5 foot. Has ramps in a storage area under the bed.
Used this trailer during wheat harvest for my carry-over and it didn't blink at 200 bushels--I was surprised. Figured when I got over 160 bu she'd groan but squeezed the tires slightly and did not bottom the springs. Electric over Hydraulic hoist worked great.
The only thing I could wish for is tie-down spots for a tarp.
The boys at the local grain elevator were oh and ahing over it.
As I said they do have a web site www.PJ_Trailers.com; maybe singular.

The other trailer-- well its a project. 20,000 gvw flatbed dump. 20 foot bed, 92 inch wide and had been used in saltwater so there's lots of corrosion. It'll be a nice equipment trailer when I get done.

Very good trailer!I have a 16 ft with the dovetail.Wish it had a wide ramp on the back instead of two ramps.I was told that PJ used to be the Texas Tuff brand.I had one those and it is nearly identical to this one, except the paint color and a few minor improvments.God trailer IMHO.

They make a new one this year with a 25 foot deck. Last 20 feet tilt so that it touchs the ground. Looks real nice and I expect they are built like the one I bought.

Felling trailers in Sauk Centre MN makes top quality trailers, LED lights etc. His employees tend to know what they are talking about.

Price is important but think about worst case scenario as well

Watch out for cheap chinese tires on trailers. I had a sidewall bulge on 3/4 the fourth blew out & sheared the wheel studs off while running down the freeway late at night in a snowstorm -10F while loaded with a dozer/bh. 18' beavertail bumper pull. The trailer tracked straight & true on 3 wheels till I pulled in a rest stop. Bought it new from an outfit in WI that replaced all 4 tires just before going out of business last year.

Thank you for the info on Felling trailers. I just visited the website, their maximum length is 28 ft. That is a bit short for what I want.

Where have you been? It's been like that for longer than I can remember in every place I've tried to buy anything.

Try asking one of those dweebs at BestBuy a question, any question. The only thing they know how to say is "let me tell you about our service agreement...".

The only way to get what you want at the price you want to pay is to do exactly what you did, become an informed shopper.
