"Torque Amplifier" was I.H.'s trademark for a two speed shift-on-the-go transmission ahead of the main transmission. This allowed a straight-through speed (as if the T.A. were not there), and a second "torque amplifed" speed, which was about a 30% reduction, to give extra torque to pull tillage implements through a tough spot, or simply a gear 30% lower than the one you were in. Early examples used a plate clutch operated by a handlever, later T.A.'s used mulptiple disc wet clutches operated by the hydraulic system. In about 1973, Deere came out with the Quad-Range transmission, which is very similar in principle, a hydraulicly shifted planetary two-speed, ahead of the 8 speed mechanical transmission that was called the Synchro Range, if not sold with the 2-speed. With the 2-speed, it was a 16-speed tranny.
