Question about battery Care

I have several tractors and am always having trouble keeping batteries charged. I have recently realized that the tractors that have the batteries covered under the hood etc maintain their charge but the ones with the battery exposed loose their charge quickly (even with the cables disconnected). I am referring to the batteries losing their charge when the tractors are not running. I'm not referring to any charging system problem. Is their a reason that the battery would lose it's charge sitting out in the eleminates?

The Delco Rep told me that a battery that was not clamped down had half the life or a clamped battery. He also recommended putting isolation pads under the battery.

thanks guys. I will start getting the batteries covered. I wish I had realized this a while back. I just never realized that the ones losing the charge was the ones not covered.

I agree with Ben. You can buy/make battery boxes and that's exactly why they sell them. If you make one, be sure it's vented.

dirt and water buildup on batteries can form a low current path that will cause the batteries to discharge.
