Have an 851 ford tractor that the clutch stuck after setting 2 weeks. Have tried pulling it in first gear with clutch depressed with no luck. Anyone have any ideas on how to unstick it without breaking it down?

Going to add my 2 cents.Probably nobody has experienced a stuck clutch like this even in those 200 plus posts.Bought an old Massey with a stuck clutch. After trying about everything I could think of,I took the tractor apart to find the bell housing almost completely full of rodent nest material.Seem the last owner took the inspection plate off and must have left it off for quite a while. Finally had to chisel the disk off the flywheel. The good news is all I need is a new disk and a pilot bearing.Everything else cleaned up O.K..

I gotta give Mike M's method a lot of points for excitement, but if you're one of those (like me) that gritted his teeth through Space Mountain at Disneyland, but went on it because the kids were too young to go alone, try this: Heat a thin-bladed kitchen knife about 2 inches from the tip and bend it 90 degrees; remove starter; tie down clutch pedal; through the starter hole, work the knife blade between the clutch disc and flywheel; rotate flywheel with big screwdriver on the ring gear teeth; repeat until clutch frees up.

After the first time you kind of know what to expect not so scary. You also have a method I have used when I can get access to the disk. Most tractors anymore and some of the old ones the starters are hard to get to and there are no other openings everything is sealed up tight. I listed this as my #1 method because it is simple and I have had good results with it.If it doesn't work then you move on to splitting it and in the process of tearing things off I would try any method possible to get to the clutch disk including a butter knife.

My #1 first choice for stuck clutches I learned here is to tie or wire down the clutch pedal, get tractor started in the highest gear it will start in,go to a wide open area-long lane works good, shift trucker style letting off throttle and shifting into as high a gear so you can go fast once going good speed with clutch pedal still down -Hang On to the steering wheel and be ready to countersteer jab on one brake pedal within a few trys it should break loose.DO THIS ON LEVEL GROUND AND BEWARE TRACTOR WILL JERK TO THE SIDE go easy on the brake jab at first and see how the tractor reacts.

Ron I had my J.D. 970 to stick after sitting 2 or 3 weeks one winter, what a J.D. mechanic told me to do got it unstuck and it has not stuck again since then 2 or 4 years ago. What he told me was to start it and jerk it into a fast gear and when it got going good to start tapping the brake, and start depressing clutch (to see if was working ) until it engaged.

There is a way to do it but I won't share it with you because no clutch should ever "stick" because it sat for two weeks. Two years, maybe. Twenty years, sure. But never two weeks. You really should pull it apart.

Thanks all for your help in getting the clutch unstuck. I was prepared to try all of your ideas if needed. I chose Mike M. idea first because it seemed the easiest. I tied down the clutch, started tractor and jurked it in first, then walked it up to fourth gear while driving to the field. I tried braking it but ford brakes soon got hot. I ended up going up a steep hill in the field and about half way up she broke loose. Its worked fine ever sense. Thanks again for your help.
