I am looking for a tractor to use, among other things, to mount an A frame with a pin cup so I can maneuver my 5th wheel trailer into a tight driveway. The trailer weighs approx 16K. The gearing should allow slow movement. It should also have a PTO, 3 pt hyd lift, wide front and complete in all respects. I think one like a TO30 or 8N would work. All recommendations are appreciated.

I would feel safe doing that job with my forklift, weighs 9000 lb, rated at 5000 lb load. I would also be tempted to try building a dolly with crazy wheels like those on the back of lots of swathers. Those tires could be far enough back so that the weight on the tractor would be some percentage of the total, and the load point on the tractor could be at or ahead of the rear axle of the tractor.

Growing up in mobile home manufacturer territory (Elkhart, IN), I've seen several manufacturers use 8N's or the likes of tote a wide variety mobile homes and RVs when the tongues are on dollies, and even smaller units from a balled draw bar from the 3 points. BUT, in all my years, I've never seen anyone try any tractor setup with a 5th wheel unit. There isn't enough money in this world to get me to sit unprotected at that heighth with any 5th wheeler at my back, not on the biggest, weighted tractor, not even if it was on a dolly. Use your pickup, even if it means cutting down that tree in the way. Mark Krzyzanowski.

Thanks for the input. The tongue weight is less than 2.5K lbs and the grade is level. I appreciate the concerns. Given this info are there any additional thoughts/suggestions. The loader is certainly an option but on what unit?
Thanks to all.

Shouldn't we be concerned about Tongue Weight and not gross trailer weight?

Not necessarily!!! Both might be important as well as braking capacity and sheer gross weight
This guy may be trying to push his trailer up a 1 in 3 slalom course, as well as all the rest of the dangers already pointed out. Who knows?
Making recommendations which lead to a serious incident could leave someone with a law-suit pending. We all (or lots of us) saw what happenened to the guy 'moving' the safe, only about a week or so ago.

The other guys are right. The only use for a tractor in that situation is to use it to build a wider driveway and/or increase the radius of the turns. Any decent loader tractor with a back blade and you would have all you would need.

Jack, I agree with Rusty. There is no way that a TO30 Ferguson or an 8N Ford will handle 8 ton on a drawbar that sticks out a foot past the axle. A hitch in the front end wouldnt hold up either as you could never steer it. It isnt the power that is critical, its the weight distribution. Towing 8 tons laterally is totally different than bearing the same weight vertically. I think you already have the best means of manekuvering your 5th wheeler and that is the vehicle with which you haul it down the road. You simply need to hone your skills at maneuvering it into your driveway.

If your trailer weighs 16,000# I think you need to be looking at much larger tractors than an 8n Ford.

FOR GOD'S SAKE do not hook that much weight to an 8N, on either end. There have been more people killed on those little puddle jumpers than there were on anything else.Mainly because they don't have a solidly mounted drawbar, just that silly three point, way back behind the tires. The neighbor up home tied a chain on that thing, back to his pickup, put his wife in the seat to pull him out of a mudhole, and in about 10 seconds she was dead. Well now wait a minute..... .....hmmmmm mmmmm m. No, I was just reminescing. Anyway, you need a bigger tractor, Harley

8n....slow reverse gearing? your kidding right? an 8n goes about 20mph in reverse (not really quite that bad)

Anyhow, I echo what others have said about rerouting the driveway
