recently purchased new flat trailer to haul 6000# tractor, thought about adding D ring tie downs so as not having to run chains thru stake pockets. Can I lag these D rings through wooden deck or do i need to weld them on outside of frame?

Everyone else has given good advice, but I will add one more idea. If you are using straps instead of chains, "D" rings work better. As stated by others the wood floor alone is not of sufficient strength to hold a tractor (or a car for that matter). You can add steel re-inforcment under the floor then use 1/2" bolts through the "D" ring, floor AND steel. There is rings on the market that can be made flush. Just make sure you check the load limits. Hope this helps, Stu.

Make sure all your chains and straps are D.O.T approved, especially your straps if you plan to use them . make sure the straps are marked dot approved on them. I stress this bacause state police are nailing people for using unapproved tie downs. Ihave seen them cut straps and make you drop irailer and buy new ones. also use grade 70 chain this will make them happy. States are broke and they will take your cash, just use your head and be safe

No No and NO!!!!! !!!

Tie downs while only used at minimum pressures most of the time need to be able to withstand strong forces in a emergency. On top of this tie downs can only be measured at the weakest point. Be that the 2x6 pine board or the 5/16 bolt holding the board down. Wood makes a good deck because the forces are transferred over a large area. But when you try to pull from a small set point it is a different story.

I think John and I have commented before on hauling regs. Make sure, for your own sake as well as those around you, that the tie down points are tied to the most substantial portion of your trailer you can reasonably get to. Use GOOD straps or chains and tie your load down so it can not move. Tying down properly seems a pain when you KNOW you aren't going to have an accident. But, those around you and YOUR WALLET will be better off if you do it right. This is one area where overkill is a good thing.

Jim,

I find that the stake pockets are a great place to tie down with chains, if your pockets are open on the bottom. I drop the hook down through the pocket, then I bring the hook up and hook it on to the top edge of the pocket. It works best if the hook is on the opposite side from the direction you are pulling from with the chain. So, if you were tying down the right front side of the tractor to the right side of the trailer, I would drop the hook down the pocket, and up and hook on to the front edge of the pocket.

My trailer came with welded D-rings. When you tighten the tie downs, lags will never hold.

Scares ya to death don't it. Thinking your wife or daughter has to do a panic stop in front of THAT rig. Never seen an M in the back of a pickup before.
