Can anyone give me a real rough estimate of the cost to rebuild an H engine? I have access to a free H but would like to know what I am getting into. The engine is currently stuck. Is there a chance I could get it running without a rebuild or at least unstuck. I would welcome any help. Thanks a bunch.

Check out everything else you can before putting too much money in it (especially the clutch and transmission). Also pull the starter before trying to free the engine, a lot of old Farmalls will get the starter jammed on the ring gear and lock up.

John, I wouldn't listen to what Ron has to say--he's probably the most negative person on this board. I don't think you've got anything to lose by checking it out. Like some others said, drop the oil pan, make sure there isn't something seriously wrong and go from there. I found a Farmall H that was stuck and P.B. Blaster freed it up just fine. Go for it.

As others have said, take it and use/sell it for parts if nothing else. If it spikes your interest, then you have a start of a great hobby. You can't do much better than free! Good luck!

Look on this web sight, you can buy parts for them here, New piston kit witheverything you need is less than $500.00. It should have all you need to rebuild an H tractor. Then all you need is time and labor to get the job done. Good luck

If you are a gambler, get the tractor home and drop the oil pan first. Check inside real well with a flashlight, if the rods, pistons cam etc are looking reasonable you may be able to do the BP Blaster trick. On the other hand rebuilds are fun, you can do over time, streching the 600-1000+ cost out. One other thing to consider, how are the tires and rims? there is another $1000. Thats the beauty of the hobby you can not sell it for what you have into it, so you keep it and then get the urge to get another one.

You are looking at approximately $700 to $800, maybe more, for a rebuild kit which will include sleeves, pistons, bearings, etc. This will be parts only. If you hire the work done it will add to the cost. Add another $100 to $200 for reworking the head and you can see that you will easily have $1,000 to $1,500 in just the engine. The sad part of this is the fact that you can purchase a good running H for the same kind of money. On the other hand, if someone offered me a free H, I think I would take it. If nothing else, it may have some useable parts which you could use on a better tractor.

The term "stuck" is meaningless. The reason why it's stuck could be anything from some cylinder rust which is cured with a can of PB Blaster to a tossed rod which means you have a fancy boat anchor.

Your getting it for free most likely because the guy knows the cost to rebuild the engine would easily exceed the cost of a good running tractor. In other words, the tractor is worthless.

I'll take it if no one else wants it.

John,
The answer to your second question is yes. On the information you have supplied (very little), I would imagine the cost could range from almost zero to the price of a 'new' engine. Someone might give you the cost of a replacement engine by offering it for sale.
It would also depend on your engineering/fitting abilities as to whether you do the work, or have it carried out for you.
Regards, RAB
