I have a guy coming over to do some grading, about 3-5 hours with Cat D4 dozer, I was wondering what is the going rate, this guy has his own excavating company and he is insured. I am thinking about $60/hour or so is this right.

The rental place here charges $485.00 for a D-3, for 8 hrs., and that includes delivery and pickup.

I charge $200.00 for the first 3 hrs, and $50.00 per hr. after that for my 450. BUT, i only take jobs when i want to.

Best part is, that most of the jobs are close to me, so i pull the dozer over with my tractor. Once the dozeing is done, many times they ask me to do something while i'm there with the tractor too. I do it, but at the same rate as the dozer.

The guy came over last night and charged me $300 for 3 hours of work, we stood aroung and Bull***tted after the work was done. He graded about 40yds of dirt, and scraped a new area next to my garage for gravel. He was telling me how tough he has it, general contractors not paying, ex-wife, etc. etc. etc.

I have a local CAT rental place near me, which makes trucking cheap, $75.00 to haul a D-4G to my place, the daily rate is $375.00/day + fuel or 8 hours, min. 8 hours, although I can get a 1/2 day if I really need to. I think he does that because I make sure to take good care of what I rent, by cleaning the tracks good with a hose when I'm done, greasing it properly, checking fluids, and not abusing the equipment because its a rental etc. No $100,000 general liability insurance required as well ! I appreciated that !

I rented a D-4G, 2 months ago, for 4 days, had 2 decent size jobs to do which I finished within the time I alloted for each. It was well worth it, I got a machine with 2.4 hours on it, it was brand new, I took some photos of it before I wore the paint off the tracks, and of each job, it worked out well, I could not even compare prices of bringing a contractor in to do this work, these rental outfits really make it affordable to get some earthwork done. Another big help was having many years experience as an operator, I enjoyed running this D4-G, they're all nice when new ! If you have the skills and a decent rental outfit, its cost effective to rent and do it yourself, the only headache is setting up for refueling, I made sure to use clean containers, and a funnel with a fine screen to get by, this one was quite fuel eficient too. If I had a large job to do, I'd set up a tank arrangement from a local supplier. I'm sure contractors don't want to hear this & I understand that, been in construction for 20 years, but it sure worked out great, got a few more jobs coming up too.

This guy has done work for me B4, It has been a few years though, I asked because I was curious, I trust he will not rip me off. To take a guess, he will ask for about $350 for 3-4 hours of work. (in cash too)

Since he did work for you before I guess your not in for any surprises. It also sounds like this type of work varies greatly.I know it is hard to shop around as half the time you can't get people to call you back. I am in the process of getting a pole building built a lot of people doing them but none seem to need the work.

I have found that if you mention the key word of "CASH" they respond with answers that fit your needs. If you have small subcontractors then Cash should work.

Going rate around here is $90 to $120 an hour, for 8 hour minimum. $90 end of the scale gets you a small tractor (D4 or smaller) $120 end of the scale gets you something in the D8 size range. 3 or 4 hour job will have the operator spending as much time moving the tractor as running at your site. They'll usually charge a premium for a small job.
Then there's the guys that specialize in small jobs. They usually have a smaller tractor, and will price their work by the job, as opposed to hourly. This isn't carved in stone, and rates vary across the country. Good luck. John

Not sure in your area but $60 an hour wont get you a D4 here and less than 8 hours wont get you a dozer of any type (4 hours at $80 would get a skid loader). D4/550 and down runs $85 an hour with an 8 hour minimum (and trucking charge) or 40 hour w/o trucking. Bigger runs an even $100 with the same trucking and time limits.

Size don't matter, results do. The local guy that makes all the dozer money charges $1,000/day.
