Where is the serial number located on a Cummins 400 truck engine?

Thanks
John

John, All the info for the engine is on the data plate that is rivoted on the block between the timing cover and the accessory drive . If that plate is missing there is a ser # on a machined surface just below the head on #6 cylinder, take that number to a cummins dealer and if they are in the mood they can tell you what that engine was , if it has not been rebuilt as a different CPL # . More important is the CPL # as it tells you what is in the block .The CPL # is also on the
tag on the fuel injection pump , Ser # won't be there, but having been rebuilding cummins engines for more than 30 years , I have not needed the ser # just the CPL # .

Bob is correct - on the front cover area probably around the PT pump drive. What's more important than the serial number on a Cummins is the CPL (Control Parts List) number, as it specifies the arrangement of the engine and what parts are used where. If you call Cummins for parts, the first thing they'll want is the CPL number.

Have you looked for a nameplate near the front of the LH side, on the accessory drive area?

The only name plate I found was on the compressor. The name plate had a number that turned out to be the part number for the compressor.

Thanks
John

I have not looked at one for a couple of years, but the engine number as BUILT. is also stamped into the block toward the top on the drivers side so to speak. There are 7 or 8 digits in this this number. We had a funny insurance claim one time and we took the VIN number of the truck called the manufacture and they gave us the engine number. If the engine has been changed, then you are in trouble.
