Haybine question

I just bought a 9" New Holland haybine. This is the first one I ever owned and never ran one before. I normally use a sickle mower and conditioner behind my IH H. I usually start cutting the field with my sickle in a counter-clockwise motion to cut the edges and then reverse and go in the correct direction to finish the field. The question I have is can I also do this with the haybine? What is the best way to start a field?

Got alot of hours in front of a New Holland haybine(469 and 488). I always cut clockwise and then come back when I get done and cut the outer edge. Most times your liable to tear something up cutting the outer edge first, tree limbs, old posts, junk, etc.

Yes you can reverse rotation, the only way TO do it is that way.

I've got the same haybine. You must watch turning left sharply or you'll ruin your left tractor tire and tear up the tongue jack.

We have a NH 1431 discbine and it has an adapter you put on the hitch to extend it out about 8 inches or so to help avoid hitting the tongue, it also is a center pivot so when you come to the headland you swing the other way and head right back down the side you came up. A real time saver in wide fields!

When I get rich, I'll have one of those too as I really would like to go back and forth in the field rather than making a box out of it.

Just like you said. The nice part is the haybine windrows the crop for you and you don't have to worry about getting your sickle hung up in the last round's grass.

Additionally, it has skid plates under it (2) that you adjust for cutter height (with a pin). My manual recommends 4" stubble for sudan to get a good regrowth. Grass doesn't matter . Mine is kinda a pain as I do both and am continuously under the thing moving the plates up and down.
