How To Check Oil in Koehler

Koehler K241A engine oil dipstick is mounted on a threaded plug. Does one check oil level with plug resting on top of block, or threaded in?
Also, there is lots of sludge at the bottom of pan. Is there some way of dissolving & draining without disassembly, or would I be better off just leaving it alone?
Thank you.

Any engine with Spash-Oiling should be run with the oil level at least at the FULL mark, or 1/4" over...!!! If you get it on a hillside, it will get oil better..and not loose a rod..!! I always use HD 40 Wt Castrol, and have not lost an engine since I started doing this... The dipstick sets on TOP of the threads, to ck the oil level..

Regarding the sludge...

The right way is to remove it mechanically. However, if time is money, then here's how I do it.

Run Mobil 1 in it for a couple of hours. Change oil and filter. Keep doing this until the sludge is gone. Note, the last time you change oil it will remain clear for a couple of hours and then start turning color again. That's perfectly normal.

The reason this technique works so well is that the base stock for Mobil 1 is actually an industrial solvent. If you continue to use Mobil 1, no sludge will form.

I was going to say, why drain the Mobil 1, but I see you are not using something else, just using it to remove sludge then leaving it.

I use 15w50 Mobil 1 in my lawn tractors mowing 2 acres at least twice a week, all summer.

I only change oil at the end of the season (once annually).

This spring my 5 year old Koehler was getting a new spark plug. While out, I shone a light into the spark plug hole at the cylinder wall. I COULD STILL SEE THE MANUFACTURER'S CROSS HATCH HONE MARKS ON THE WALL. Say what you want about oil. The proof is in the pudding.

Years ago I sold a truck with a 454 in it. It had 150k hard towing miles on it. It used Mobil 1 exclusively.

As I was telling the buyer how clean Mobil 1 kept the engine, he was skeptical. So I pulled a valve cover. The inside of the cover was clean enough to do brain surgery on. The guy could not peel off the Franklin's fast enough.

I'm sure you know about Mobil 1's test where they bought 25 car & truck engines, ran them 250k miles, tore them down, and did not find one part that was out of spec. Yes, even the cylinder bores were in spec for both size and taper.

I have lots of engines around here. Every one runs Mobil 1.

It used to be on the Mobil 1 site about the BMW engine run on a test stand the equivelent of 1000,000 miles. At teardown everything was still within factory specs. A test sand run is not real world, but still,a million miles without being worn out is super good.

My Dad always told me to check oil with the dipstick plug just resting on top of the casting, with no threads engaged. Running a 30 year old Power King tractor, so I guess he was right!

That's exactly where my Kohler owners manual says to check it.

Thanks Jim. You're right. I visited the Kohler site & downloaded the manual for this engine, which I guess I should have done first. =0)
