Kim, could we please...

The off-topic topic on the beheading of the South Korean man has been very, very fascinating. Unfortunately, it is totally inappropriate on this forum. Would it be possible for us to have another forum specifically for political discussion? I would much prefer to debate with my fellow farmers and agriculturally inclined than with some city slicker who doesn't know his head from his *ahem* on another website.

Thanks either way,

Bill

I will say what I think was the general opinion last time when Common Ground was tried and that is a few OT s are fine, just don't let it get to be an OD forum. I myself find the OT s interesting and I often read every message. If it is a subject I am not interested in I just go onto the next. I have no problem with the number of OT posts we have here.

Had the same gripe over on the red power board a while back. The moderator started a "BS" page called the coffee shop. Now everyone is on the "BS" page and only the Farmall Purests are on the regular page talking about how "my cub looks better than your cub" kind of stuff. I think that if you don't like OT posts, don't read them!! How hard is that?? Some people just need to whine I guess.

I copied the following quote from the top of the page describing what is to be on the forum:

"Discussion related to miscellaneous tractor topics".

Using your very words, "What is hard about that?" Even I can understand that part so I would think a bright young fella like yourself would have no problem with it. Can you imagine someone on a political discussion forum website making a post like "Massey Harris 101 ignition problem"? They'd probably think the guy was maybe not the sharpest knife in the drawer. But here it's supposed to be OK? Still trying to figure out your logic. Now we're putting the blame on those reading or responding to the posts rather than those making them. Typical thinking these days, blame somebody else right?

The OT forum is little used because the blowhards want an audience not a debate.

I think that OT is fine as long as it pertains to farming or related subjects that are of general interest to past, present, or wanabes. That covers a wide variety of subjects including home, buildings, vehicles, machinery, animals, crops, etc. An infomation forum, "how to" "what's your opinion". I don't think that the few "personal" posts detract either, after all, we are here to help each other, aren't we?

Hi Bill,

I'm the guilty joker who posted that post and thanks for showing me how darned out of line I am.

Okay, you want to talk about tractors and agriculture?

Try watching the hail take your crop and leave you nothing but 1/2-inch pieces of stubble for your efforts.

Try watching this happen 3 years in a row.

Try setting in front of that banker's desk and listening to him tell you that you are $600,000 in the rears and that your note is due and it is due now.

Try watching those pot-bellies pull in your yard and load out every critter on the place, go to the sale barn and bring nothing but killer prices.

Try watching that auctioneer sell everything you own & have worked all your life for and watch it go to the iron peddlers for 9 cents on the dollar.

Try putting up with all the neighbors’ down-the-nose glances and those whispers behind your back.

Try scratching and digging to come up with a half a million dollars to keep the wolves from taking your land, which has been in the family for generations.

Try loosing your wife and family because of hard times and no money.

Try driving off the place with all that you own being one suitcase full of old clothes and an old worn out Chevy pickup.

Then spend the next 20 years pawing, fighting, and scratchin' & gouging to get it all paid off and to get back to square one.

Try reading on this forum all those great many posts who describe how great those Regan years were.

No disrespect meant Bill, but I don't think you have a clue about old tractors and agriculture. If I offended you, by golly I'm sorry and I apologize.

I guess I'll just stay completely out of your little tractor club because I've been hailed out before and I'm pretty well used to it by now.

Allan

Allan, I feel your pain, been there done that, and Hey, they can kill us but they can't eat us. If you need a time, place, and audience to vent after what you and I have been through, just go for it. Being here for one another to my way of thinking is much more important than being politically correct and staying on the appropriate subject on any one forum. Sometimes a guy likes to take to the other guys who he knows will listen, or have been there. Allan, just keep on keeping on, Harley

Harley, can I ask you an OT type question, even though I'm not supposed to. Now, I'm new to this site, so forgive me. "Harley 1983", would that pertain to Iron or Shovel? Because I prefer old iron all the way, and that would include a certain 79 Shovel near and dear to my heart that marks everywhere it stops. Wouldn't have it any other way, personally. Just wonderin, before I aint supposed to. No biggie though. Mark Krzyzanowski.

Don't take it the wrong way, Al. I am not saying you're out of line or anything. It really was a great discussion you started. I was just hoping we could have a forum where discussions like that are "on topic".

I'm sorry for the losses you have sustained and think it would be very hard not to become embittered by them. I'm only 24 years old and have experianced loss but not near on the level you have.

Please don't take the way I stated my request the wrong way.

Allan in NE I've asked farm related questions on this forum and various people have told me this is a tractor forum. I think the demographics of this forum is very few actual farmers and a lot of retirees, heavy on the military. So a lot think all that a tractor is for is to pull a finish mower around 3-10 acres.
A lot can run and hide their head in the sand but politics is in our lives more now than ever before. If their wife is running to town better throw in an extra $20 for gas. With China buying up the metal the prices arent just going to stay with scrap metal. Sooner or later it will be in the new parts.

Tlak, As you well know, we have had some passionate disagreements politically, but I agree with you here. As I am sometimes one of the most passionate debators,, it doesnt detract from the fact that we here are all part of one big family. Not unlike sitting around the feed store, grain elevator, or fertilizer plant, talking about everything under the sun including politics and sometimes even farming and tractors. I will say that for as intense as some of the O.T. discussions have gotten, some of the people who object to them should try going to some of the political forums. Sadly they are nothing but four letter words and very little if any substance. Its hard to define what is appropriate and what is not, and I think Kim has done a magnificent job of providing a place, not unlike the feedstore or grain elevator, where we can talk about anything. including our health, our children ang grandchildren, our tractors, and yes, our politics. Being tractor enthusiasts doesnt in my opinion make us one demensional, in fact it only adds to our demension. I have no objection, however to an OT topic being removed after a couple days to condense space as they can get lengthy.

Allan, please don't take it personally. This subject comes up quite often and many people post messages on political subjects. Some of the responses get out of hand which I think is the biggest complaint.

Anyway, everyone is welcome here - including you - and I was very sad to read what you wrote about your farm and family.

Did you get your farm back? I wasn't sure what you meant at the end by "back to square one".

There are people here who care about others - and that includes you. Please continue posting and joining in on the conversations and keep us informed of your situation. Maybe someone here can help in at least a small way.

Kim

I agree that the subject got out of hand and ended up with people acting like animals towards each other.

First off I want to say that people are more than welcome to discuss off topic subjects here. My feelings are - just don't let them dominate - tractor subjects should be the priority.

That said, there is an OT section already for this board and it has been there for some time. I gave each board its own "OT" area so that those who are use to talking with each other can talk off topic with the same crowd instead of throwing everyone together in a large OT section like Common Ground. It's kind of a volunteer thing, you don't "have to". But if you think your converstation might bother the tractor folks by all means take it next door to the OT room.

If you look on the main Tractor Talk page you'll see a link called "Off Topic" right between "Post A Message" and "Archives". Here is the Off-Topic Forum

Back to what I said about OT here, again I'll say it is not a problem. But I do grimace when I see conversations start up about politics and religion, because they seem to always resort in name calling. So I wouldn't mind if those types of conversations were kept in the OT area.

Thanks for listening,
Kim

Hello Kim. So if there IS an "off-topic" site here, then why are the off-topic posts that get into the mud-slinging allowed to stay on the main forum page? As I mentioned below, I'm not talking about regular, everyday stuff but as you mentioned the political stuff gets a bit nasty.

Hi Mike! Remember there are 30 or so forums. A lot for me to keep track of! That is why I made the "Report to Moderator" link.

When you are reading a discussion (using the Expand option) you'll see that link next to every conversation. If you see something inappropriate just click on that to send a heads-up notice to me.

I check my email about 4 times a day so I can usually take care of things within a few hours.

Thanks Mike
Kim

Thanks Kim. I see where that off-topic post option is and went there. Some interesting stuff but of course because so few of us visit, there are not many replies and a controversy would probably never develop there. The potential is there though for it to be an interesting option as long as it doesn't get to the stage that the Common Ground forum got to. Keep up the good work.

Have you ever been to the local feed store, gas station, whatever and everybodies talking about the topic of the day? Did you ever notice that the topic of the day gets more responces than "whats my tractor worth,etc.."? Did you happen to notice that Kim made an off topic section to each site and nobody goes there? Did you just wake up this morning?

I don't mind them. Its a lot better then listening to the media, I don‘t always know what slant that they are putting on different subjects. Especially if you aren't old enough or haven't been interested in these things for very long, or you don't know the history of different topics. I come here to learn about the history of tractors and to learn more about them. So learning something about some American history isn't a bad thing either. Each side is generally very passionate and they try to be honest in what they believe in. You do have to be a bit of a judge and tone down the extremist ones (without discounting them though). Maybe a separate forum could be set up for these O.T subjects. Thanks. Hound

I think once the first response is made, any of us can report the thread to the moderator by hitting the link that shows up there. Funny that one of the persons responding to this post gets into it immediately again by referring to "city slickers" which is just another in a long list of prejudices that we all have relating to something or somebody. I am 100% in favor of all of us avoiding making the posts or responding to them (even though I have gotten into it myself occasionally). It suprises me how much hate and poison is out there in our own society let alone those overseas. As a paying subscriber to this website, I think those of us who post off-topic political posts are totally out of line. I'm not talking about somebody asking about the brakes on his car or his well water, that's a little different.

I agree, we're bombarded with the news from Iraq everywhere you turn. This being a tractor forum it would be nice if it was left only to tractors and semi related topics.
Of course if it's labled OT I guess you do have the option of ignoring the post.
