I just got my 46 U running after having the valves done and got the timing set and the only way it will idle is if I hold the governor/carburator closed otherwise it goes to high RPM I did not have the governor apart or anything relating to it. Looking for thoughts or if I may be missing a spring on the carb butterfly??

Ryan - I had the same problem with my '47 UTU. The cause apparently was accumulated wear in the various governor and carb link parts - enough wear so the governor could no longer fully close the carb butterfly.

Solution was to shorten the rod link between governor lever to carb throttle shaft slightly. Do this by carefully bending a bit more angle in the bend in the link's midpoint. It's kinda a trial and error thing - bend a little and try it, bend a little more, try again, etc.

Mine now idles nicely at 350 RPM.

The governor rods are maleable iron and are meant to be bent for adjusting the governor. My Dad used to set all of the neighbor's MM engines by ear. Man, he could make those governors perform real good. Most of them came from the factory out of adjustment and turning too few RPMs.
