Hello, after having problems with my buttercup squash I got to reading in to ways to get rid of the bugs, and one suggestion was to plant caster beans in amung them to naturally keep cucumber beetles away. I hadn't heard of caster beans before so I did a search on them to find out what they were used for, and found that they are very poisionous to humans, and also contain ricin. I'm wondering if these plants are even safe to grow or if they put stuff in the air that would be harmful to breath?. I see they are used to make oil, but what kind of oil, what is this oil used for?.
thanks in advance!.

Several years ago a diplomat was assinated by using a tiny bit of ricin injected by an umbrella tip[England]. Took several days but no there is no cure, the victim felt a minor tap but in a crowd thought nothing about it until the hospital.

Castor oil was at one time the premier of engine oils. Still is a fine lubricant. It just won't stand up to high engine heat.
Also, for those of us who remember, was used for certain medical purposes which will not be explained here. Just think "Can't go - then you run."

The beans are considered to be unsafe to eat. We always plant a few near our sweet potatoes to keep the moles away. Incidentally in the link and in your letter the word CASTOR bean has been incorrectly spelled. it is not CASTER bean. I am sure the toxic material has been somewhat refined and is not the bean. Potato plants are also unsave to eat. I would be hesitant to eat a tomato plant or as pepper plant. A peach seed is also unsafe for humans to eat. Not being critical and I admire you for using caution.

As well as rhubarb leaves, and many other things in the garden. Apple seeds contain a poison.

On the other hand, dad especially, & me too, have eaten a whole lot of peach pits. They have a good bitter taste. Mom always ate the apple seeds along with her apple. Only receintly have I heard these things aren't supposed to be good for one.

My neighbors with the dairy farms have 20-40 healthy cats with their bucket of milk a day to live on, while the vets say it's bad for them. My farm dog, only one to live into his teens after gettting parvo & all sorts of things he wasn't supposed to survive had a real sweet tooth for chocolate - we never heard it was bad for him until he was long gone from old age.

Sorry for my ramblings. There has to be some intersting cross-thinking on pesticides & man-made chemicals, but far too off-topic. :)

Castor oil. Also Castrol(tm) Oil started making lube oil based on castor oil years back. Motorcyle racers of two stroke engines are probably familar with it- oil film clings to cylinder walls and pistons, bearings excellent high speed lube. WW1 aircraft used it at high altitudes- it didn't gel like petroleum oil of the time when cold RN..

Castor plants are perfectly safe to grow. The beans are not safe to eat. So, don't eat them.

Do a little more 'Net searching and you will find that many common plants are deadly to eat. Even some plants that we eat parts of have other parts that are very poisonous, like rhubarb leaves.

That's interesting isn't it that you can eat the stems (stalks) but not the leaves. Lest one not be careless in the preparation of the meal.

Exactly. Rhubarb stalks are a prized delicacy in some parts of the USA and many people will tell you rhubarb pie is the best there is.

What if I was to brush hog them after the season was done, I'd imagine some of the seeds would get broke open, what would that do?. I wouldn't have any use for them except to keep insects away, and I don't know of any place that would buy them. Actually, I don't know if I can even grow them in Vermont.
thanks for replying!.

You're very welcome. No, like most poisonous plants, they must be ingested to cause harm.

But there are exceptions, contact poisons. Poison ivy almost certainly grows in your area. Sure, it makes nasty blisters if you touch it but it can kill you very dead if you burn it. Many years ago a neighbor went on a canoe trip, got stuck overnight on an island, and started a fire to keep warm. The next morning he decided to throw green vines on the fire to make signal smoke. He got downwind and inhaled the fumes. It took him a month of horrible suffering in a hospital before pneumonia finally killed him.

Yes, poison Ivy is pretty common here, especially along river banks. Thanks for the warning, I had no idea it could be deadly if burned.

Mom and Dad always had a few planted around the garden and yard so when I moved away to the big city I had them around my garden and yard. On second thought that could have been before someone discovered they were poison.

Mama always had castor beans in the flower bed, simply because she thought they made a pretty bush. She taught us to never eat them or to play with the beans and we didn't. However, after I was grown and had small kids, I planted some and my neighbor was telling me how poisonous the seed were. I pooh-poohed the idea, and called it an old wive's tale, and popped a bean in my mouth, and the neighbor let out a yell. I was laughing and holding the seed between my teeth, and then spit it out, but I could taste the oily bitter taste. I went in and rinsed my mouth and drank some orange juice, and laughed a little more. By and by, it was bedtime, and I went to bed. I don't think I had been in bed long when I doubled over in pain and made a run for the bathroom. Before I got back to bed, I had to turn and run back. This went on and on and on, and finally, I was too weak to walk, and was almost crawling. I don't believe I have ever been so sick in my life. And I never even bit into the seed! The next day, I could hardly get out of bed, and my stomach was so tender, it was unreal! Would I have castor beans again? Yeah, but you'd have to hold a mighty big gun on me to get me to put one in my mouth!
