If you have a diaphragm fuel pump that operates off the crankcase pressure, check the oil breather. If the oil breather is not closing fully because of gum or dirt, the pulsating pressure in the crankcase will not develop and the fuel pump won't operate correctly. Pulling out the choke results in a negative pressure that helps pull fuel through the fuel pump.

Just had the same problem on my JD with a 12.5 hp Kohler motor. Pulled the carb off, cleaned it, and drained fuel tank and cleaned it and all fuel lines and filter. Runs like a charm now, must have had some crud in the fuel system.

I have a 18 HP Koheler too. Had the same problem you did. It's just like everyone else here said, dirty carb / fuel system. Clean everything out, and you're problem will be solved.

Your probably going to have to pull the carb and clean the dirt out. Fuel inlet, bowel if it has one, bad diaphram if it has one. Something is stopping you fuel flow to the carb.

Clean the vent in the gas cap.
