what causes a starter to drag when it gets hot?

starters should not generally be run long enough to get hot. They are only rated for intermittent use and the user manual often advises on the maximum run duration and minimum rest times.

Common thing is worn bearings that allow the armature to drag on the field pieces.

Maybe this is because the armature gets bigger because of expansion of the metals at higher temperatures?

If the bushings are worn allowing the armature to drag against the ironcore inserts,then the magnitism pulls the armature event tighter against the field iron cores robbing all the powr from the starter. UncleTom
